A concert under the patronage of the President and Mrs. Johnson for the benefit of the United Nations Association of the United States of America will be held at Constitution Hall at 4:00 p. m. on Sunday, October Z5. The National Symphony will perform under the direction of Leonard Bernstein and Howard Mitchell; and will feature distinguished artists who have appeared abroad under the United States Cultural Presentations program. As in past years, governors and mayors across the nation are requesting their respective communities to hold appropriate ceremonies to mark the 19th anniversary of the UN. The Department of State coordinates the participation of the Federal Government in UN Day observances. To facilitate your agency's recognition of UN Day, I am pleased to enclose display and program materials which I hope you will find useful. C. 20036 DU 7-1600 CONCERT INFORMATION ## Mrs. Angier Biddle Duke announced today the musical program for the UN Concert, which will be held at Constitution Hall on Sunday afternoon, October 25, at 4 p.m. Mrs. Duke, who is the Chairman of the annual benefit for the United Nations Association of the USA, said that the concert will feature two works by American composers and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Leonard Bernstein will be guest conductor of the National Symphony for the Ninth Symphony and Howard Mitchell, the permanent Director of the National Symphony, will conduct during the first half of the program. Other artists who have appeared over- seas under the Department of State's Cultural Presentations Program will participate in the Concert. Dr. Mitchell has selected for his program the Overture from "Candide", composed by Leonard Bernstein and "Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copeland. Leonard Bernstein has asked Betty Allen, Phylis Curtin, Nicholas Di Virgilio and William Warfield to appear as soloists for the Ninth Symphony. The Westminster Choir from Princeton, New Jersey, will be heard in the choral portion of the Symphony. The Concert is under the patronage of the President and Mrs. Johnson. It salutes the Chiefs of Mission accredited to the United States. Hosts for the occasion are Secretary of State and Mrs. Rusk, and the National Chairman of the United Nations Association of the United States of America and Mrs. Robert Benjamin. Mrs. Dean Rusk is Honorary Chairman of the Concert, and Mrs. Arthur Goldberg is Chairman of the Patrons Committee. Vice Chairmen include: Mrs. McGeorge Bundy; Mrs. Jack Valenti; Mrs. David Bell; Mr. Harry MacPherson; Mrs. Harlan Cleveland; Mr. Chester Carter, Deputy Chief of Protocol; Mrs. Abe Fortas; and Mrs. Donald MacArthur. Mr. Gerald G. Wagner is Program Coordinator. The Concert will climax a week-long celebration of the anniversary of the founding of the UN, beginning October 18, which the United Nations Association of the USA is organizing, in cooperation with the District of Columbia Citizens Committee for UN Day and UN Week. Tickets will go on sale at the National Symphony Box Office, 1108 G Street, N.W., after Labor Day. Prices for tickets are $15.00, $10.00, $7.50, $5.00 and $3.50.
