The treatment of the 2-year-old child was initiated on the 5th day after the onset of
the disease. For the first 8 days penicillin was administered in doses of 2000,000 U.
intratliecally and 3000,000 U. intramuscularly, cor-bined with 4 9. sulpharthiazole
daily for 2 days. The later treatment consisted only of lumbar punctures with the
purpose of exarin~- the CSF. The child i-mproved rapidly and was discharged in good

in healthy persons, and in patients with chronic glomerulonephritis without urasm-
ia or with pyelonephritis. In patients with subacute glomerulonephritis with neph-

TITLE: The Examination of the Relationship Between Life and
Grain Size of Ceramic Tool Tips

No.8, pp-357-361.
Seemingly erratic variations in the life of experimentally
manufactured ceramic tool tips prompted an investigation into the
effect of grain size on cutting life. Conclusions from this
work were then applied for classifying "Pyrocor" tips produced in a
pilot plant and tips of foreign origin were examined to see whether
the conclusions apply to them. . The structure of ceramic tips
was examined in incident light after polishing and etching (the
specimen is covered with borax and heated at 900% for 10 min,
then the borax dissolved in boiling hydrochloric acid of 1.19 sp gr)
for grain boundaries and thin transparent sections in transmitted

light for structure. Conventional preparation of specimens stuck
to a glass glide with canada-balsam was satisfactory for coarse-
grained material but the method of Doctor Zoltan Veres had to be
used for fine grained one. A small ball is formed and flattened
on a heated glass rod of a thermal expansion similar to that of the
specimen. The specimen is ground on one side (using a diamond
wheel) and placed with the ground side on the glass. The two are
then reheated and the specimen pressed into the glass;. after
cooling, the aggregate is broken off the glass rod, stuck onto a
glass slide with canada-balsam and finished off by grinding the
other side of the specimen. More than 500 sections have been
prepared and the structure photographed using a Zeiss LuWdE
microscope. A coding system has been adopted for describing the
salient features of the structure. Numerals in the first plague
describe the predominant grain size according to Table 1:

Letters in the second place give the type of structure according
to Fig.10 (A = uniform grain, B = uniform matrix with scattered
groups of different grains, C = uniform matrix with two
different groups of grains embedded- D = matrix formed of two
distinct areas of different grain size , E = as D but with
individual crystals embedded, F = as D but individual crystals
and grain-groups embedded). Numerals in the third, fourth and
fifth place denote in order of importance the size of

constituents present beside the predominant one. suffices
indicating their position in the section (b = Inner part,
k =.near to the edges). The section is normally taken,'near the
cutting edge; sectioning through the whole cross-section of
16 tips showed this to be typical of the bulk of the material.
The cutting life was tested on a lathe with a depth of cut of 1 mm,
a feed of 0.2 mm/rev at a rate of 340 m/min, machining on a steel
cylinder of 250 kg/mm2 Brinell hardness. Spring-loaded tool
holders held the tips and 0.5 mm land wear was taken as the life
of the tip. The life was a function of grain size (a life of
12 min or more being conpidered as good); the number of tips
tested is given below: Good Poor

according to which part of the structure was indented. All fine-
grained tips of good tool life had hardness of 85 and above.
Increasing sintering temperature led to coarser grain (no
temperature values quoted). Hungarian "Pyrocor" ceramic tips
were tested in a similar manner. Their hardness varied from
78 to 91 RA; when fine grained tips with a hardness variation of
less than +-2 RA were selected, their minimum hardness was again
84 to 85 iiA-. ceramic tool tips of pure A1203 and of A1203 metal
oxide or carbide type were tested too and the results are given
in Table 2 and Table 3 respectively. The type of land-wear is
described by these symbols; K = wear, s = uniform smooth,
es - chipping, m = edge disintegrates. In these tests, steel
of 262 kg/mm~'- Brinell hardness was cut at 280 m/min with
0.1 mm/rey feed and I mm depth of cut. The above results support
the conclusion that ceramic tips of uniform and minimum 85 RA
hardness and of a fine (max. 3 micron) grain size give
satisfactory tool life. Tips of mixed structure yield
unpredictable results whilst coarse-grained ones are always poor.
The only exception was the East-German "Harrith C4011 with low

hardness but good life. These conclusions permit a closer
control of quality in producing Hungarian "Pyrocorlt bits.
