Thank you so much for your gracious letter of August Ist,
in which you advise me that the C.I.A. "deliberately cherish anonymity" and
could not be made the subject of a motion picture.
We understand and respect your viewpoint and have taken
immediate steps to delete all references from the script. In summing up,
I am sorry that I cannot think of anything more brilliant to say, than the
time-worn bromide - "you can't blame a fellow for trying".
On a personal note, I might observe that if you think the
five years have flown since Miami Beach, Winston Churchill and Ham Fisher,
(please do not let Ham know that I gave him second billing to the Giant of
this century) ? what should I say about the fleeting years since you and I
soldiered in the same regiment in the A.E.F. This happy coincidence was
uncovered during our talk, andfrankly, I've been bragging about it ever since.
If you ever come out this way, I shall look forward with
great pleasure to seeing you again, if your time and duties will permit.
I trust that this round of correspondence has not encroached
too much upon your valuable time, but I do want you to know how grateful I am.
