ABSURCT.. JLUyl derivatives of polynuclear and conden!;ed aromatic
hydrocarbons were
synthesized by allylation of the latter with allyl alcohol in the
presence of the I
acid catalysts ZnC12, FoC13 and SnC14-6H2O. ZnC12 '-as found to be
the most effective
catalyst.' The fol I owing L comDounds were obtained (yields are
given in 'Darentheses)
ally1naphthalene (68-3%), aliyl-a-methylna-phthalene (88.1%),
allyltetralin
allylbiphenyl (44.Y%)p allylacenaphthene and ally1fluorene (50.0c').
The
affect of different reaction paramotors such as temperature, ratio of
the reacting
'eld o the
components, amount of.catalystj duration of experiment, etc. on the
yi f
products was studied. 11-fonoallyl derivatives were found to form
almost exclusively.
If FeCl) or SnC14-6HZ0 are u-sed, the allylation reaction is slow and
the yield of
