ABSTRACT: To establish the fre4uehcy of isolating lactose-negaft,.ve variants of E. coll
the authors in 1962 studied 1283 colonies of ii.
_p#acolon bacil from 322 samples obtained
from feces and environmental objects. In 116 cases colonies were found which were
agglutinated by combined sorum against enteropathogenic E. coli types 026, 055, 0111,
and 145. In determining the type of E. coli 36 culutres were not agglutinated by type-
specific sera in a dilution of 1: 10, "t 7 cultures were agglutinated by type 145 serum, 2by
type 026 serum, and 1 by type 055 and 145 sera. In serological characteristics 17
cultures corresponded to the type 145 enteropathogenic E. coli. All the isolated cultures
were Gram-negative short rods, 14 liid motility, lactose was not split off, glucose vnas

split off with the formation of acid and Ps, 4 did not farment sucrose, 8 formed indol, and
7 formed hydrogen Sulfide. After a year's storage the cultures were again studied. Their
morphological, biochemical, and antige-nic properties had not undergone substantial
changes. All cultures wereagglutlynted by B-serum of type 145. The titer of
0-agglutination increased In 4 strains, drop in 2 within one dilution,. and In 9 remain
unchanged. Only In 1 of the 17 cultures was there a successive drop of the titer of
0-agglutination, as a consequence it was discarded. Thus on the basis of the stability of
the antigen structure, 16 cultures were identified as lactose- negative variants of E. colt
145. Three straWs isolated from Infants were of particular Interest since they are of
diagnostic value in detecting lactose-negative variants of E . colt 145 in young children
with intestinal dysfunctions.

C TAGS: vehicle suspension system, spring, hydraulic device
ABSTRACT: This Author's Certificate introduces a hydraulic spring for a pneumohydrau-
lic elastic element in a vehicle suspension system. The unit contains a casing which
I
1holds a liquid-filled cylinder with radial openings connecting the internal cavity of
the cylindee with the cavity between the cylinder and the casing. Located inside the
cylinder is a rod with a plunger which divides the cylinder into two working chambers
connected by radial and axial pasBages in the plunger. Mounted in the axial passage
Fis a check valve.and on top of the cylinder is a cap with an opening for admission of
the rod.- In order to achieve optimum characteristics on the compression stroke, the
.,spring is equipped with a floating piston which has an opening for passage of the rod
wid is mounted in the cylindrical section of the casing. The cavity between the piston
and the cap is connected through a channel to the cavity between the cylinder and the
casing.

Abstract: The apparatus for determination of kinematic viscosity consists
of an improved viscosimeter described by Barr (Barr G., "Viskozi-
metriyeO', 1938, 1110). The liquid under study, contained in a
closed (sealed) system, flows by gravity from the bulb through
a vertical capillexy. The time is noted during which the meniscus
drops between two marks on the bulb. Viscosity is calculated
by means of the formula: --44 - = C I ( ?, - f,;. ) 'C - C ;,9 1 /T a.

Abstract : Dogs and rabbits were subjected to total roentgen
radiation (6oo and 700 - 1000 r respectively), and
at various intervals the stages of carbohydrate
metabolism were determined. Preliminary injection of
insulin (1) sharply increased the radiosensitivity of
the animals: all the rabbits died the 2nd or 3rd day
after radiation. In irradiated animals the injection

with a drop in the sugar level to 25 M8$, Injection
of small doses of adrenaline to the irradiated animals

normal occurred sooner. -- V.I. Rozengart
