SOV/49-58-8-12/17 TITIE: 6ii-'P-a-le magnetism of Igneous Rocks in Armenia (0 paleo- magnetizme izverzhennykh gorn,7kh porod Armenii) PERIODICAL: Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Seriya Geofizicheskava, 1958~ Nr 8s PP 1033 - 1039 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The accumulation of data on paleomagnetism of effusive rocks (lava deposits and flows) of Tertiary and Quaternary origin in Armenian SSR became a very important contribution to the geological and geophysical survey of the region. The author investigated more than 500 samples of the effusive rocks with an object to determine the magnitude and direction of their residual magnetism in relation to the period of their formation. The mgnetic roperties were calculated according to the Formulae (63 and given in the form of a table. The following denotations were used: -4 magnetic susceptibility$ Ir - residual magnetism, 0 - angle of horizontal inclination. The columns of the tble show: (from left to right) name of the rock, region, origin, number of samples, the four Card 1/4 On Paleomagnetism of Igneous Rocks in Armenia SOV/49-58-8-12/17 values as calculated by Eq.(6), azimuth of the inclination Ir . The negative sign at (~ signifies an opposite polarity. The msults of investigations can be slim arised as follows: 1) the effusive rocks of the TeitLary and Quaternary periods are characterised by their high, magnetic suscep- tibility and the residual magnetism which.is mud:Lhi-her than their inductive magnetism. The relation Ir/I-i 3 being about 10, implies that the young rocks are the main cause of the residual magnetic field of the region. 2) The Armenian effusive rocks can be divided into three groups: the normally magnetised rocks of the QuaLterna y period, the opposite magnetised rocks of the Upper Pleocene and Post-Pleocene and the normally magnetised rocks of the Middle Eocene-Paleocene and Miocene-Middle Pliocene. 3) The direction of the residual magnetism differs from that of the inductive magnetism. This is in agreement with the theory that the induction should have no great effect on the original magnetism of the effusive rocks. Card2/4 4) It was noticed that the relation Ir/Ii = q is On Paleomagnetism of Igneous Rocks in Armenia SOV/49-58-8-12/17 increasing with a decrease of the intensity of the rock formation, e.g. Q = 8.4 was found for the rocks of the Middle Eocene-Paleocene origin, Q = 9.2 for the Upper Pliocene and Q = 10.2 for the. qetd.ternary. Thus, knowing the value of Ir and X I it is possible to determine the stratification, distribution and the time-correlation of the variOUB.1a,yers and to establish the Earth's magnetic f-Leld in relation to its geological past. 5) It was observed that the vector I. , in accordance with the theory, is inclined to the left in relation to the latitudinal direction of lava flow and is of the same direction for its meridinnal motion. Therefore, a possibility of determination of the doubtful geological constructions in certain cases became feasible. 6) The iatbusive rocks found occasionally in the region of investigations were of normal magnetism. That indicates their formation being affected by hoth the residual magnetism and the magnetic susceptibility. 7) The extrusive rocks of the Upper Pliocene were found Card3/4 On Paleomagnetism of Igneous Rocks in Armenia SOV/49-58-8-12/17 to have a high residual magnetism of the opposite poJwity. The above observations agree with most of the data obtained by the various investigators in the USSR and abroad. In addition, it should be noted that during the Tertiary -period, the Earth had an opposite magnetic field to that of the earlier and later periods. TITLE: Paleomagnetismf/of the Effusive Rocks in the Armyanskaya SSR and the Displacement of the Terrestrial Poles in the Cainozoic PERIODICAL: Izvestiya Akademii nauk Armyanskoy SSR. Geologicheskiya i geografiche8kiye nauki, 1960, Vol. 13, No- 5, PP- 33 - 45 TEXT: In the years 1954-1958 the author studied about 750 orientated samples of effusive rocks from the Armyanskaya SSR and neighboring areas of the Smaller Caucasus. The samples were examined with an M -2 (M-2) magnetometer or with Dolginov's astatic magnetometer. The author' measured: a) the ratio of the residual to the induced intensity of magnetizationj b) the azimuth of the vector of the natural residual. in- tensity of magnetization; c) the angle of inclination between the said vector and the horizontal plane. According to the position of the vec- tor, a distinction is to be made between 0normally magnetized rocks (vector points downward; azimuth is 0+90 ) and inversely magnetized Card 1/5 85508 Paleomagnetism of the Effusivo Rocks in the S/172J60/013/005/002/002 Armyansk6ya SSR and the Displacement of the B002/BO63 Terrestrial Poles in the Cainozoic rocks (vector points upwardl azimuth is 18Qj90 0). The effusive rocks of the Middle and Upper Quaternary are normally magnetized, those of the Upper Pliocene and the Lower Quaternary, inversely, those of the Middle Pliocene, normally, those of the Lower Pliocene and the Upper Miooenep inversely, those of the Middle and Upper Eocene, normally, and so forth. This is, most probably, related to the periodic variation of the direction of the geomagnetio field. From the results of measurement the author calculated the position of the magnetic pole. A Fig. shows the wandering of the magnetic pole for the period between Jurassic and Holocene. The authorts results agree with the results of A. N. Khramov, A. G. Komarov, and several foreign research workers. The author sug- gests using the direction and orientation of the vector of the natural residual intensity of magnetization in rocks for their age assignment. A 300-3itor VDP- 300 vat for prolonged milk pa3tourization is mounted on a GILZ-7C4 trailers Tests wi various bacteria and viruses showed the method effective if a temperature of 800 C is maintained for 30 minutes. When STI vaccine was given, the nonsymptomatic infections changed into the malignant kind. The rajority of the animals died. It is clear that the nonsymptomatic infection was one of the factors leading to the deterioration of the conditions of the animals after vaccination.
