ABSTRACT: For the separate determination of the content of uranium,
thorium, radium and potassium in acid igneous rocks the
authors used a combination of a-, P-p y- and y-discriuination
measurement. As a result they obtained the following set of
equations: Aa a1U + a2Ra + a3Th
A0 PIU + P2Ra + P3 Th + P 4K

In these equations A a 0 Apt AYJ and A Y2 denote the activities
of the samples to be investigated, expressed in equivalent
percents of uranium in equilibrium. a1'a2t'Q39P1u'P2;P 'P 'T

equilibrium for uraniump the radium groupt thorium and
potassium according to the a-,P-9y- and j-discrimination
measurements. This set of equations can be solved by means
of determinants which then yield the formulae for the de-
termination of every individual element. The coefficients of
the above-mentioned set of euqations can be determined in a
theoretical way or, still better, experimentally. In order
to obtain exact values in the experimental determination,
the standard mixtures must satisfy the following requirements:
1) Equilibrium with the decay products and absence of other
radioactive elements in the radioactive initial material.
2) A low radiation coefficient (not above lo~~) of the uranium
and thorium compounds in equilibrium. 3) A uniform composition

ABSTRACTvThe results of obs'eriati6is 'of 'group velocity dispersion of Rayleigh
surface waves conducted in the period 1957-1964 by the "Simferopol"'
seismic station are presented. A standard SVK (Kirnos vertical system
seismograph) was used in conjunction with a special long-period vertical
seismograph to record 33 earthquakes whose foci were located in the
'Earth's crust and whose epicentral distances rw:;ed from 3500 to 16,800 ka
'The magnitude of the earthquakes varied in the range 5 1/4 < M < 7 1/2,
the periods of the dispersed waves were in the 10-100-sec interval, and

Simferopol' to the epicenters of most events were in the 0 to 900 intervolf
i.e., originating in Eurasia. The technique of calculating the azi-
muthal dependence of group velocities by periods made it possible to*"'--

is an azimuthal diagram of the group velocities. It shows that In the
:case*of azimuths approaching 66* the mean.velocities decrease for all
periods, owing probably to the presence of such mountain chains as the
Tien Shan along the wave path. At azimuths of about 72-74% the velocitt",
-increase because of the influence of the thin crust of the Gobi desert
;region. It was established that the method of studying the velocity
-dispersion of surface seismic waves over e*tended paths, though it yields
only mean values of the parameters of the Earth's crust for great dia-
tances, nonetheless is sensitive to differences in the structure of the
layered medium in different directions froip the point of observation.
Velocity differences as a function of azimuth are most readily discernable
An relatively shorter-period surface waves (T - 10-35 sec), owing to
the dispersing influence of the Earth's crust. This influence decreases
as the period increaseaq until the Influence of the upper mantle pre-
.dominates. At this point, velocity differences are no longer dependent
,on azimuth, indicating.the greater homogeneity of the upper mantle in
comparison with theA "US~** JDMI

ABSTRACT: An extensive experimental investigation and comparisions of its results
'with existing theories are reported in the article. Current--~voltage characteristics
of silicon "sun betteries" studied by the authors in 19S7 did not agree with tae
Shockley's "classical theory" (Bell Syst. Techn. J., 28,, JUy, 1949); nor did it
agree vith the improved theory by C. T. Sah, R, Noyce, and W. Shockley (Proc'
9, 1957). A new method for mwmifacturing power silicon rectifiers by diffusiN; B
into n-type Si was developed. The diffusion vas conducted in air at high
temperature. Resulting diodes vith a 3-14-nq-cm p-n Junction area passed aboul,
1J.000 amp of average rectified current (water cooling) and had a breakdown voltage

TITLE: Controlling the load of main marine diesels
SOURCE: Morskoy flot, no. 3, 1966, 30-31
TOPIC TAGS: diesel engine, marine engine, marine equipment, marine engineering
ABSTRACT: A method is proposed for controlling the load of main mwine diesels based
~n~setting up consecutive ratios between the velocity of the boat and the shaft speed i
'of the engine. The speed of the vessel is given as v, while the engine rpm is desig-
I~ated by ni. If ship velocity and engine speed vary, reaching values Of V2 and n2,
then (vj1n2-V21nj)O, then thk
'.xesistance of the vessel has increased and the engine is overloaded. When vj1n1=V21nj'1
engine operation should be watched. It is difficult at present for the mechanic on
'duty to detect engine overload, as Soviet vessels are not equipped with speed indica-
tors or rudder axiometers. It is recommended that these instruments be inclui
,t,h,e engine rooms of ships now being designed. The Department of Automation of Diesel
d Gas Turbine Units at the Odessa Higher Engineering Naval College has developed a

the total Mg (y,p) cross section as a function of 7-ray energy in order to obtain

give a satisfactory description of the photodisintogration process, and Ca4O, for
which similar calculations fail to account for a number of features of the process.
The energy and angular distributions of the photoprotons wore determined with 400

scintillation spectrometers, using a 12.2 mg/cm 2 target. The angular distributions of'J
the photoprotons with energies below 6.7 MeV were practically isotropic, indicating thp"
participation in the photodisintegratibn process of a number of levels with different '!:
orbital angular momenta. The energy distribution of the photoprotons ejected by 23 MW~
bremsstrahlung did not differ greatly from the distribution found by U.E.Tdms and W.E.14~
Stephens (Phys.Rev. 82, 709 (1951)), using 22.5 MeV-bremsstrahlung, and by J.Yomamaro
(J. Phys.Soc.Japan, 18, 11 (1961)), using 21.5 MeV bremsstrablung. The (y,p) cross
section as a function of photon energy differed considerably from the cross s-.:tions
measured by K.Shoda, K.Abe, T.Ishizuka,N.Kawamura, and by H.Kimura (J. Phys.Soc.
Japan, 17, 735 (1962)); it was in better agreement with the (y,n) cross section of
J.Miller, C.Schul, G.Tomas, and C.Tzara (Preprint.Centre d'Etudes Nucleniros do SaclaY7,1
1963) and the absorption cross settion of B.S.Dolbilkin, V.A.Zapevalov, V.I.Korin,
L.Ye.Lazereva, and F,A.Nikolayev (Conf, Rend. Congr. Intern"t. Phys.Nucl.Paris, 1964,
vol. 2, 1060, Paris, 1964). The integrated (y,p) cross section was 180 mb MeV; when
that is added to the integrated (y,n) cross section of Itiller et al. (loc.cit.), the
sum is 265 mb MeV, which may be compared with the value of 360 mb MeV given by the
dipole sum rule. The authors thank N.N.Balamatov for assistance with the work. Orig.

TUTS . The described experiments were undertaken to find out if the point-
contact Nov M v gears could be generated by hot rolling process used already in
the industry for conventional involute profile gears. The load capacity of Novi-
kov gears produced by cutting has been studied at the Gear Department of TsNIITK-
ASh, and therefore same g4ar dimensions were used In the experimentts with hot
rolling to compare mechanical properties. T&NIITMASh used special milling out

(as is practiced In rolling involute gears) was not possible because of slipping
of the blank on the standard indexing pinion. Slipping caused either a wrong
