cavitation in water

TEXTs The author describes cavity tests in the water-tunnel to de-
termine profiles with regular pressure distribution for velocities close to
that of sound, also matching the parts of flying bodies at the3e velocities
in air. Both cavitation in water and local sonic speeds appear where local
subprassures on observed bodies are largest. Shaping the profiles so,that
cavitation in test tunnele appears as late as POSBible and with maxilaum dis-
tribution, would give profiles with higher penetration in air (since local
sonic speeds under these conditions appear at higher velocities of these bo-
dies). The critical value of local pressure coefficient is given by

re p equals vapor pressure of water p, but when there is absorbed air in wa-.
ter thia has to be accounted for by Pk - P + &p. Loc(Ll prosaure which jus t
gives rise to cavitation is pk, termed cavItation pressure; similarly.' G* is
the cavitation number. In practice when 1~ is reached at some point on t~e
body, a so-called cavity bubble filled w, h a mixture of water vapor and air
appears in water; its shape depends on the conditions of flow and the shape
of the body. The profile with constant pressure distribution is given by the
outlines of the bubble so that the cabins of planes and other parts.can be
shaped better by minimizing losses in penetration i,,e, by avoiding early ap-
pearances of the critical Mach number, To investigate pressure distribution
along the tangent of the wings, the wing with the profile serial number VACA
64 and medium thickness 13% was chosen. Results are shown in Fig. 2 where

These results combined with those obtained in air at different values of
Mach number show that pressure distribution changes substantially with MW
and the cavity region spreads to the outer edges, Pressure inside the bubble
is constant. To find the effects of parts of the planes on the Mach number,
the Ninhc method was used, i.e. the cavitation number was measured, when
the cavitation first appeared which then gave the critical Mach number. When
the latter is plotted against the angular function of flight 0 which for nor-
mal flights in practice, has a range of -30 to +50, relations between differ-
ent parts of the body can be followed and by reshaping, matching is achieved.
Reshaping is followed in the directions of the bubble formed, on a particu-
lar part. Thus, tests on the model arrow Cp. 450 , showed the proposed cabin
to be unsatisfactory since the critical Mach 0number0for the wings was lar-
ger than that for the cabin (in the range -3 to +5 for 0k), Cavitation
first appeared on the cabin which then must also be the cause of initial lo-
cal sonic speeds in air. When another model was studied and the cabin resha-
ped as indicated by the cavity, better results were obtained for critical
Mach number of the cabin i.e. the cabin curve, was above that for wings and
the old cabin. To investigate aerodynamic profiles suited for high velocities

re, all with the base diameters of 18 cm. Air was led directly behind the
elements in the water tunnel. This changes the tunnel conditions, as bavita-
tion now appears earliexl, and the air bubble is formed behind the element,
Flow conditions were also varied for each element, and the different cavits-
tional numbers measured; hemisphere conditions in the tunnel were such that
po = constant, q0 / constant, the cavity pressure was kept constant by con-
stant air inflow close to Po, and this gave small cavitational - nos.(which
introduces errors in their values, since there is a difrerence of two large
numbers),, In order to find whether the cavity periphery gives places of cbn-
stant pressure spread, one profile such as the second one from top in Fig.14,
one with a hemispherical head, a cylindrical body, a conical tail, and one
with an ellipsoidal head, a cylindrical body and a conical tail were made
and tested; the results showed that the first profile had constant pressu.e
distribution, and the other two marked depressions near the 'heads. The el,i-

quent causes of trouble with the umbilical oord in childbirth are
sideways or crosswise positions in the womb and pronounced cephalo-
pelvio disproportion. Childbirth must be comploted as soon as
possible if the umbilical cord is oompresnod or broken, by opern-
tion if necessary, unless the infant is already dead. The authors
describe their experiences with 30 such cases out of 12,524 births
at their clinio between 1957 and the end of May 1962.
