Title Multiple centers and their role in secondary phenomena in crystals of alkali-halide salts Periodical Zhur. eksp. i teor. fiz. 26, 242-247, February 1954 Abstract Examines absorption apectra of additively stained as well as x-rayed crystals of HCI. Comments are made on the difference of these spectra in the region of long waves. The difference consists in the fact that in the first case the spectra give R- and RI-bands, while in the second these bands appear only after preliminary illumination of the crystals. Experiments are described which establish that the so-called dark cur- rents in the crystals under investigation are closely linked with the absorption bands R and R'. It is established that the R- and RI-centers are the centers which govern the appearance of the dark currents. The lumintacence:of crystal phosphors is detirimined by the existence of activation centers and electron capture centers. Fig. I shove the simplest energy level scheme by means of whiqh the principle of the occurrence of luminescence is described in the introduction. The following effect is observable on KCI crystals: When them crystal is exposed to X-ray or short-wave ultraviolet radiationt it changes its color and begine,to.lumineace in short intervals. If the crystal is exposed to visible or long-wave ultraviolet light after this luminescence has atoppedp it begins to luminesce anev, until the crystal is almost completely decolorizede This second irradiation is termed stimulation. The crystal is excited by X-ray treatmentg F-oenters and vacancies are formed. X-centere (F-center plus two vacancies) are formed by stimulating light. In hov far the last-mentioned assumption is correct may be explained by a study of the thermoluminescence of discoloted crystals. For this purpose the author made ex- periments on a device that permitted automatic recording of thermoluminescence eurves. Fig. 2 shove the results obtained by the post-graduate student N. M. The absorp- *ion bands attained maxima at I - 555 MA(2.22 ev~ (for F-centers) and 825mg (1-49 ev) (for X-centers). It resulta, that luminescence results essentially fre the dissociation of M-oenters (forming from F-centere and vacancies at 70 C). The formation of H-centers is schematically represented in Fig- 3. Fig- 4 shows the corresponding level scheme. Fig. 5 shows the thermoluminesoence- and decoloration curves for an X-band (according to G. S. Ramishvili). TITLE: On the ultraviolet absorption of X-rayed KC1 crystals PLRIODICAL: Optika i spektroskopiya, v.12, no.4, 1962, 523-524 TEXT: Samples prepared from specially purified crystals of KC1 and X-rayed at room temperature for 1 hour (50 kV, 9 mA, copper anode) were used for this investigation. Absorption'spectra were also measured at room temperature of a C~-4 (SF-4) type spectrophotometer. The characteristic V3 (218 mmk) band was observed 4nd a relatively weak band with a maximum at about 260mmk. There is also a strong F band'at about 550 mmk and a weak M band at about 830 mmk. The absence of the V2 bands was unoxDected and is usually characteristic of crystals containing a significant concentration of Ca, Sr or Ba. It is not thought that the 260 mm1c band depends on any new type of V- centre. The experiments-of Dorendorf showed that for X-rayedcrystals of KC1 there is a Vi, absorption band with a maximum at about 255 mmk at - 1800C. TITLE: Concerning the kinetics of the photochemical reaction of conversion of 7 centers to M centers in XCI crystals. SOURCE: Optika i spektroskopiya, v.16, no.3, 1964,. 475-479 TOPIC TAGS: color centers, alkali halide crystal, potassium chloride, F center, M center, M center model, photoconductivity, center luminescence ABSTRACT: Although it is well known thit as a result of irradiation of colored al- hali halide crystals with light in the F band there form B1 centers (from the F cen~-' tars) the mechanism of the conversion is still obscure and there is no unanimity concerning the structure of the M centers. Accordingly, the present work was devot- ad to investigation of the kinetics of photochemical conversion of Feenters to It centers in KC1 crystals. The initial additively colored XCI crystals contained only F centers (verified by observation of the absorption spectrum) with a concentration of about 1017 per cm3' as estimated by the Sriahula formula. For the purpose of re- peak experiments with the same crystals, the M centers (Iol band) were nnnihilated by Card 1/2 Accr-,ssioN im: AP4020959 heating in the dark to 3000C. The main measurements were made at room temperature. In addition to the absorption spectra, recorded by means of an SY-4 spectrophotow.0- ter, the photoconductivity of the crystals was measured by means of a sensitive 01- betronater, and the luminescence by mcana of an FLU-22 pliotomultiplier. The experi- mental data arq presented in the form oX curves. The time measurements, show that ur.- der F band (560 mg) illuminatinn equilibrium between the concentrationa of F and M centers is attained in about half an hour, at which point the concentration of r centers falls off to about 316 the initial value. Analysis of the data indicatestint. the M. conters form as a result of attaciLment of a neighboring detcet by an excited F center. By heating them to 10000C, their impurities were removed (for analytical data see Table 1). They were dissolved in hydrochloric acid "pure pro analysi", evaparatedv and 0.1 M solutions were obtained. Mixtures of these chlorides at a molar ratio (related to oxide) Of Y203 : S0203 from 1 : 1.64 to 4 : 1.64 were heated to 950C and precipitated by means of chemically pure oxalic acid of the same temperature.(Table 2). The thermal decomposition curves of pure yttrium and scandium oxalates, as well as of the coprecipitated oxalate were taken (Fig. 1, Table 3). In contrast to the temperatures at which the mechanical mixtures of the pure oxalates start decomposing, the decomposition temperature of the coprecipitated oxalate was between the temperatures for pure oxalates. The pure oxalates and the coprecipitated oxalate were heated to 9000C, and their X-ray pictures were taken. The values for Y203 are given in Table 4. As may be seen from Table 5 and Fig. 2, a continuous series of solid solutions of the oxides is formed, with the lattice constant changing steadily from a = 10.61 kX (pure Y203) Card 2/3 I oil M,41, t-, pligg I 7. 3/078'62/07/00~/00 1/607 . 101 eilitUkliova-t S AUTEORS: Savitek4ja-p Ya. tv V Brykina, L. Reliability theory examines the following basic operations on the laws of distribu- .tion of P(t), at any value of t, (in the following in order to distinguish the system from the elements comprising it the subscript e is used for them): (1) sequential, combination of n elements, (2) parallel combination of n elements, (3) combination with replacement of elements, and (4) averaging with respect to random operating con- ditions. The exponentiallaw of,reliability has acquired ekeeptional'signifir-ance, D 72. P W Card 112 MG., 519.95 T'. TITLE: o`=mct~als PER10DICAL: Liteynoye proizvodstvo, no, 6, 1960, 30-31 TEXT: The authors discuss the filtering of liquid metals in the pro- duction of secondary aluminum to purify the melt from iron. This method oaoily removoo impurities, i. e. oxide, flux, Dlag etoo Filtration is of particular Amportanco With Lhu canting of W11 moldo when the volocity of motion of the metal is high, particularly during the initial stage. Decreas- ed metal velocity in the riser diminishes the danger of slag foam and blis- 4. ters. Before filtration the permeability of lump filters should be deber- mined. For this purpose the tests described in this article were carried out. The time required to filtrate 5 - 7 tons of liquid metal was recorded and the filtration rate determined according to formula w = G -.XT'P cm/sec. The following symbols were used: G = weight of filtered metal in grams,,y specific gravity of the metal and F = cross section of the filter in sq cm according to L. 3.
