The vehicle is designed for rescue operations and constitutes an adaptation of the Polish truck "STAle A66"Which is produced by the Truck Plant in. F. Dzierzynaki (Fabryka Samochodow Ciezar:ovych). The added assemb3,y which enables the "STAR" A66 truck to travel on railroad tracks does not require any changes in the design of this truck@ The optimum cruising speed of the vehicle on rails is 60 km/hr. Traction on rails is supplied by the four rear tires, the front tires being suspended above the rails. Tho 'vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic Uft and other mechanical featuros for rescue purposes. (B95), U,S.A. (7.5s), Germany (Hy43), France (Zicral) and Italy (Ergal) is followed by descripti6ns of tests carried out in order to develop similar alloys but with much higher strength properties, As starting materials were used purified aluminium Al 99~-99, purified zinc. technical grade of magnesium and various additives consisting 6 r3 of binary alloys of Al-Fe, Al-Ti, Al-Cu, Al-Cr, Al-Mn, Al-Si and Al-Ni. The test mixtures were melted in an induction furnace working at 2500 c/sec supply, using graphite crucibles holding about 5 kg of the charge. Vie flux used consisted of 45% Na.Cl, 45% KC1 and 101/o NaF. The melts were refined and de-gassed by Card 1/4 VY 31902 Effect of chemical . ... P/038/61/006/004/QC)2/003 F,040/E935 iDtroducina into the crucible charge 0.3% by wt. of ZnCl,- s't U A specimens were cast in mental moulds heated to about 2000C, as required by the -F-olish, st'andard PN-51~)/H-04310 1949, Half of each batch of the snecimens were heat-treated by annealing for li '') ra. at 44011CI followea by holding at 5000C for 30 minutes and we-ter quenching at room temperature. Finally, the specimens were artificially aged at 1200C for 30 hr. Some specimens were subjected to natural ageing by holding for 4 weeks at room temperature. Preliminary tests showed that most promising for further investigation were the alloys with 4,c')%, to Wo' Zn, 0,5-3~ Mg-and 0-2.59% Fe, The optimum iron content was found to be at 1.5%; corresponding to it the optimum contents of Cr and Ti were 0.15t,!~-for both elements, "he specimens gave tensile strena, ths u!) to 54 kg/MM2 - which are nearly-double those usually obtain'--'ed for- ordinary commercial AI-Zn-Wg alloys, These new high strength alloys differ from the usual-ones in their higher It- content and in that they contain 1,5,~ Fe. A disadvantage is their low plasticity ~ac = 1-2%) in comparison with the elongation of abouL of the usudl type of these alloys (Rt = 3? k-/mm2), Further U studies were limited to the alloys with 5-9;~ Zn and 1-2~6 Mg. which Card 2/14 31902 - _r,ffect of chemical P/038/61/006/004/002/003 E040/E935 -ave tensile strengths of 45-50 kg/mm2 but had an improved plasticity (a - 2-3.59%). Determination of plastic deformation of test alloya by the Krupkowski method (Ref.11: Archiwum G6rnictwa i Hutnictwa 1, 19541 27) gave results which led the author to the formulation of a concept of 'hidden plasticity', according to which the plastic properties of metals are not fully detected in normal tests because of a premature specimen failure due to casting defects usually present in the metal structure, The correctness of the above concept was confirmed by data obtained on specimens cast in chill. moulds subjected to vibration during cast- ing and solidification. The elongations obtained for such test specimens were increased from 2.8 to 4.1%, the latter value representing the true elongation of the specimens. It is suggested that Krupkowski's method gives results approaching much closer the true elastic properties of cast metals and, because of it, the method should find wider use in research relating to development of now alloys and improvement of old ones. The experimental alloys contained 5-8014' Zn, 1.5-21,-! 0 or 1.50' iron and 0.15,114' each Cr and Ti. The alloys were studied both in the as-cast and heat-troated condition. The e.%perimcnts included tensile tests, a study of the constitutiorL of t:ie alloys, examination of izicrostructure, j:iicrohardness measuremants and tests desianed to determine the proneness of the alloys to S, hot-sh6rtness. The results of various mechanical tests conducted on cast and heat-treated material were as follows: 0.20% proof; stress 44.5 kg/mm 2; UTS 49 kg,/mm2 Young's modulus E = T150 kg/mm2 ; Brinell hardness M3 156; fatigue limit (for N Card 1/3 P/038/62/007/001/0()3/003 Characteristics of .... The results of corrosion tests showed that the average rate of corrosion of the alloys studied, tested in salt spray and in a simulated industrial atmosphere (air + So2 and CO2 )., was 0.10 g/m /24 hours, respectively, the corresponding figures for silumin LA10 being 0.39 and 0.38 g/m 2/24 hours. The resistance of the alloy to stress- corrosion cracking was lower than that of silumin LA10 but could be improved by changing its composition to 550' Zn, 2.5% Mg, 1-5% Fe, 0.15% Cr and 0-1511o Ti. The wear-resistance of the alloy, tested by rotating a loaded test cylinder against a carbide disc, was found to be five times lower than that of silumin LA10, tested under similar conditions. Shrinkage of the alloy, determined by the Panneri method, amounted to 1.5960. No tendency to deformation or hot tears was observed during the tests, in which the method of Singer and Jennings (Inst. The map was plotted from aerial photographs on the i : 4,ooo scale at a scale of the stereomodel of 1 t 3,000 on a Wild A-8 setting device. Office identification-of some constructions and contours (- 9% of the total quantity of contours), carried out in the process of plotting, was difficult be- cause of their shielding by shadows and tops of trees. The map compiled was compared with a map plotted by the conventional stereotopographical method during Card 1/2 f6mm ~ t-16 iThe problem of sm-7eying in the state forests." P. 109.
