TITLE: Statistically measuring dynamic loading of air-
craft in flight

TEXT: The author compares the classical method of designing
aircraft frames with the latest statistical approach. In the
former, the criterion of design was the highest dynamic load-
ing due to atmospheric disturbance and violent handling. The
statistical aDproach is superior. It consists in measuring
the frequency of several load levels on the aircraft prototype
in flight. The frame is then designed or modified on the basis
of fatigue strength instead of the actual strength. Acceleration
of the aircraft center of gravity is assumed to be proportional
to its dynamic loading caused by external aerodynamic forces.
This assumption is based on the analysis of frequencies. The

instrument recording these accelerations should register cor-
rectly within the range of 0 to 2.5 times the natural frequency
of the wings and not to register at higher frequencies. The
described mechanical acceleration counter constructed by the
Faculty o' Flight Mechanics P.W. (Warsaw Polytechnic) is inten-
ded for aircraft whose natural frequency of wings does not" ex-
ceed 4 c/sec. It was ihstalled in 1959 on two gliders type SZD-
8 bis Jaskdtka. The.counter registers accelerations from -4 g
to +7 9; in steps of 0.5 g between 1 9 to 3 g and in steps of
1 g above 3 g. The accelerometer shown in Fig. 1 comprises a
system of two degrees of freedom. The flat spring is attached
rigidly to the frame and carries a mass of 0.9 kg. Its end can
turn the upper pulley by -k 3600 by means of the link. The
swing of the pointer is proportional to acceleration and both
ends of the pointer are used to actuate mechanical counters.
The upper pulley drives an aluminum cylinder rotating between
two permanent magnets. Eddy currents induced in the cylinder

cal damping was adopted. Harmonic susceptibility (ratio of in-
dicated to actual acceleration) of the instrument is given.
The phase lag angle does not exceed 50 between 0 to 1.5 times
the wing frequency. The actuating link at the end of the poin-
ter was solved to ensure single registration even if there was
a sudden change of acceleration by 5 g. The instrument should
not be used during take-off or landing. There are 6 figures

An 8-year-old boy showed a peculiar form of nystagmus which was Independent of
the position of the eyes. In both eyes there was a coarse nystagmus; in the left
eye it had a clear rotatory component with a clockwise direction, in the right eye
it was chiefly vertical. The head was slightly inclined to the right and there was
also a bitemporal hemianopia. No cerebellar symptoms were found. The operation
revealed a craniopharyngeal tumour with a slight retrosellar expansion. After re-
moval of the tumour the nystagmus disappeared. It was probably caused by a pres-
sure on the commissural nuclei in the brain stem. No similar case of nystagmus

Abstract: [Authors' Hungarian summary] The authors discuss 5 cases of
skull fracture which occurred under 6 months of age, where the frac-
ture increased gradually. This phenomenon is not considered a specific
syndrome but a common symptome of various pathomorphological factors.
In two of the cases the extracranial cyst contained brain tissue and
was in essence a traumatio encephalocele. 19 Western referdnces.
