..TEXT: The paper analyzes the force (F), speed (V), time
teristics of the process of plastic deformation of a billet on a
hydraulic press (HP).
The difference between the regime required for an optimal deformation
process and
the regime of actual operation of a HP is pointed out, and the
F-and-V analysis is
set up to achieve an optimal approach of the actual to the required
regime. Working
(I) Extrusion, etc., in -which the F
processes are classified in 6 basic groups:
applied remains essentially constant along the plunger (F) stroke
(S); (H) Upsetting,
impact extrusions etc., in which the F increases at a constant rate
during the P S;
(IU) Bending, briquetting, etc.. in which a portion of the S with
constant-rate in-
crease in F is followed by a brief portion with an almost infinitely
steep F rise;
(IV) Drawing* of sheet material, stamping with rubber backing, etc.,
in which the F
increases gradually along the S, but at a nonconstant rate; (V)
Punching, clipping

of scrap, blooms$ or slabs., etc., In which the F. rises sharply over
a relatively short
path, whereupon it drops off even4nore sharply; (VI) Coining, etc.,
in which the F
rises steeply for very small Advances of the P, at a rate which is
primarily a func-
tion of the elasticity of the HP. Typical F-va.-S graphs are shown
for these funda-
mental and for composite operations.- The implic.,%tions:of the rate
of Increase of
the-F.-applied, potentia,lienergy accumulated-vetco jj--o-n-:the- -de
-sigh of -a HP are summa-
riied. The concept of the "full.n1b *a:-of. the F,-'S -g:e*aph," ~,
defined as the ratio of- the
area underneath the actual F-S curve divided by.the product rMax S,
is developed.
This quantity characterizes the energy required and affects the
selection of the drive
mechanism. Illustrative examples of operations pertaining to one of
the basic-clas-
sification groups, but characterized.by widely differing ~' s and
hence requiring
different power drivess are tabuiated. Processes characterized by
insignificant
working S' a, but prolonged holds under pressure (e.g., stamping of
plastics, us
HP for testing tubes, etc.) are analyzed. Operations are classified
by S. going from
very short S (tension leveling, coining, etc.) to long S (bending,
upsetting). Other
classificatiors refer to maximum linear V, need for V control,
constancy of P V,
specific pressure exerted on the billet* mode of application of the F
(point, line, or
area), eccentricity of F applied, frequency of application of F, and
ratio of working-
S time to total cycle time. A brief.- comprehensive, analysis is
given of the require-
ments for a HP to. be used for flash trimming. There are 3 figures,

The Central Planning and Design Bureau of the Ministry of the
River Fleet has con-
solidated the list specifying the types of steel which can be
used for engine parts
and prescribing the method to be applied for their heat
treEtment. The metallurgical
process given for the heat treatment of 3 types of steel
includes data on hardening
and cooling temperatures, changed properticag the martensite
point, and the percentage
of austenite before and after cold treatment.
Oil burners heat-treated by the
recommended technique, vith gradual.hardening in molten alkalies
followed by cold

Abstract By using ferments containing cultures of lactobacterium
acidophilum
and certain types of wine yeast, the authors succeeded in
preparing
a sour milk product which differs from other dietetic milk
products
in taste and consistency. The best quality was achieved by
cutting
the fermentation at 330 with a two per cent beet sugar solution.
The
vine yeast, vhea used in conjunction with lactobacterium
acidophilun,
stimulates the growth of the latter and increases the shelf life
of
the product up to two or three months. Three references (all
USSR;
one since 1940).

Ce(SO was used as the oxidizing agent. The sample of

and to this solution were added 10 ml of approximately
