signs of hypothyroidism. (cretinism), but who had increased
function of the thyroid gland; the acc=Llation of 1131

A comparison was made of some physico-chemical and mechanical properties of
natural and artificial desoxyribonucleoproteins (DNP) with different protein con-
tents. The protein content of natural desoxyril)onucleoproteins was varied by step-
wise deproteipization, and that of the artificial ones by producing synthetic com-
plexes with a progressively Increasing protein content. Natural nucleoproteins were
derived from the liver and pancreas while artificial nucleoproteins were produced
by combining DNA from the liver with bovine serum t1humin. Within the range of
N/P - 2.2-5.7 the viscosity of both types of complerm Joes not depend on their
proteid content; this is an indication of stability a" !!~e tertiary structure of DNP.
Experimentally, the amount of protein causing ini ersion of the DNA macromole-
cule into the DNP macromolecule (tat point of inversion)was invesillgated: This
amounts to 15-25% of the DNP weight. The same structural-mechanical properties
are retained In both types of complexes (within the range of 0.01-0.2% respectively)
provided their protein content is not less than 5e-62% (2nd point of inversion). If
the protein content of DNP is 90-95% these properties disappear again (3rd point of
inversion).

Abstract: The authors studied the affect of storing on Cho
71-1-contont of a number of plant substances, which, according
to Schou, is the measure of the active bodies in pharmaceu-
tical preparations. May found that for substances whore
the oil is intracellular, oil content decreases, Mioroas for
substances with extra-collular oil, the contont both increas3s
and decreases. Me show their findings in one table and 17
graphs. Comparison of their findings with those in the liter-
aturo decided the authors on a more detailed study, to be
reported later. 7here are 18 references: 6 Polish, one (1)
Soviet, 3 Western, and 3 Gorman.

ABSTRACT: An attempt is made to determine the fundamental hydrodynamic
characteristics of emulsifier towers and their separating ability.
The systems selected for hydrodynamic investigation are air-water,
air - calcium- chloride solution , and air - solar oil; the systems
selected for mass-transfer investigation are ammonia - water,
coke gas - solar oil. With respect to the gas - liquid and liquid-
liquid systems the linear velocities of the gas are determined as
functions of the changes in the weight-flow rates, their physical
properties, the dimensions of the packings, the volumetric weight
density of the gas-liquid emulsion, and the resistance offered by
the packing. The authors make an attempt to analyze data published
Card 1/2 in the literature in order to obtain a generalized relationship. The

relationship thus obtained is valid not only for gas-liquid systems but also for the
determination of the limiting velocities of vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid systems.
In addition, the authors use experimental data to derive an equation for the deter-
mination of the density of gas-liquid emulsions which is valid for vapor-liquid
systems. Tests for the investigation of the mass exchange in packed emulsifier
towers were performed on ammonia-water and coke gas - solar oil systems. The
investigation of mass transfer and the analysis. of the tests of other investigators
yield= an equation for the calculation of the height of the packing. This equation
is valid for absorption, rectification, and extraction towers of the counter-
current packing type operating in an emulsifying regime at limiting flow veloci-
ties. In packed emulsifier towers an increase in resistance is accompanied by
an increase in effectiveness, which in turn permits a reduction in the height of
the packing. It is shown that the resistance of emulsifier towers is reduced by
40-50c/o as compared with that of plate towers. The employment of packed emul-
sifier towers for absorption processes affords a significant reduction of the bulk
of the equipment; this, in turn, yields a great saving in metal and simplifies
operation.

for the purpose of determining FmJ' to use the results obtained
by the author and other research workers (Refs 8,9111,12). The
author investigated the system water-air. The diameter of experi-
mental packed columns was 126 zim, their height 1500 mm. There
follows a detailed description of the investigation carried out.
Raschig's porcelain rings were used as packs. In the course of
the reciprocal modeling of pack- and other tyrpes of column systems
it is necessary to assume the equivalent diameter of the passage
of current dn as the determining geometric dimension in packed
columns. There are I figure, and 12 references, 8 of which are
Soviet.

ABSTRACTs The grid plates and perforated plates with a special way of
overflowin.g which became rather widespread in recent time are
referred to as running-through plates by I. N. Kuzlminykh. As
yet there is no satisfactory computation method for columns
with such plates, so the present paper shows the respective
investigation results. Graphical representations are given as
well as considerations which show that at a certain steam
velocity the liquid is thrown from the 1-ower plate to that on
top of it. This is called the suffocating pointp and the
optimum gas velocity for the efficiency of the column was found
as lying littlo below this point. In order to determine this
working regime of & column it is necessary to know the linear
velocity of the gas, the reeLstance of the plate, and the
height of foam. In a glass test column determirm-tions were made

given. The investigations of the linear gas velocity showed
that there are two critical poihts whereby a linear function
is obtained in the graphical representation of the results
which accords with the data of M. I~ Aeroya and Ye~ P. Darovo-
kiy, and which can be used for the computation of the optim-
um gas velocity. According to the date of Pozin, Mukhlenov,
Tumarkina and Tarat (Ref 26) it was stated that the height
of foam must be determined separately for each system, and from
that the distance of the plates an be computed. For the com-
putation of the plate resistance a mathematical equation is
,-iven which can be used with deviations of + 14o. Finally a

computation scheme is given for columns wit-h running-through
plates which renders the dimensional computation possible
with satisfactory exactitude for practic-ttl purposes. Vlith
that an interval of o,6 - o#9 is assumed as efficiency of the
plates. There are 9 figures, 3 tables, and 32 references5

ABSTRACT: The principle of opora~.-*Lrai of a foam tuba column (Fig) is
outlined. It consists of closely packced vertical tubes
enclosed in a column. A gaseous phase is introduced into
the bottom of the column and through a distributor passes
upi.-iards through the tube,:;. A liquid scrubbing phase is
introduced at the top of the column through a side inlet
and passes down through the tubes forming a foam with the
vapour phase. &-'is the foam inoves downwards through the
tubes the separ-ation of the gas and liquid takes place
The liquid phase leaves the coluran through hydraulic seal,
while the gas leaves through the outlet at the top of the
column. The officiency of the column (75 nim dial 1200 iimi

from hydrogen sulphide by the arsenical-soda solution.
Mean results are given in 'the tabla; 11-he officioncy of
the column was found -to be 130 - 180 times highor t4han
that of 7aorksl scrubbero.
