General Description:
Capitol of Nordland. Main manufacturing and distributing center for large area
of main land and for southern Lofoten Islands. Two-thirds destroyed by Nazis
in air raid of May 27, 1940. Soon to be northern terminus of Norwegian Northern
Railway.
Geographic Description:
Seaport at seaward end of fjord network with few offshore islands. Link
between mainland and Lofotens. Distance from coast to Swedish boundary
here at minimum. Mountainous interior but town side flat.
