hypothesis (Ref 11) according to which the metabolism in the
zone of regeneration of nerve fibers is increased and the syn-
thesis predominates. It is a local increase of metabolism
which is not effective in the entire axon. Initially it is
observed even in the case of lacking connection with the nerve-
cellular body. There is, however, no reason for speaking of an
autonomy of this process (Ref 11), since (Refs 10,13) variations
of the fermentative activity take place at the other end of
the cut off neuron in%the nerve-cellular body as well.
