The author makes an attempt to investigate conditions conducive to
the accumulation of phytin in the mycelium of Penicillium chrysogenum,
and to elucidate the role of phytin in the life processes of this mold.
She arrives at the following conclusions:
1. By using the quantitative method, she has found that the content
of phytin in the mycelium of the mold depends on the composition of the
nutrient media. The greatest amount of phytin bias found in mycelium
grown in a medium edntaining corn extract.
2. The mycelium of the mold contained a ferneat which decomposed
phytin and formed inorganic phosphorus.

3. The mold could develop normally and could produce a considerable
amount of penicillin in media in which the only source of phosphormus is
phytin.
4. The contents of the phytin in the mycelium varied considerably in
the process of the development of tha mold. This pointed to the important
role of phytin in the process metabolism.
5; The role of phytin in the production of penicillin requires fur-
ther investigation.
