Approved For Release 20051/Oonmtfff ~Q00380R000400140006-1 JOURNAL OFFICE OF LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL Friday - 30 November 1973 1. (Internal Use Only - JMM) Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel, House Armed Services Committee, called to inquire about speculations that the plumber's activities were somehow the result of Agency concern over security leaks. I told him that there had, of course, been exchanges between the White us and the Agency over security leaks from time to time, but at no time had the Agency had any idea of the true nature and scope of the plumber's activities, advocated the establishment of the plumbers organization, or had any suspicions of the plumbers illegal activities until the Watergate case broke. I said we were briefing Chairman Nedzi in more detail this afternoon and would be glad to have him join us, which he said he would like to do. 2. (Unclassified - JGO) Met with Everett Bierman, House Foreign Affairs Committee staff, and received from him correspondence from Representative Edward J. Derwinski (R. , Ill. ) enclosing a constituent letter concerning CIA produced general reference maps. I told Bierman that we would review the enclosure and provide the requested information. 3. (Confidential - JGO) Met with Lewis Gulick, House Foreign Affairs Committee staff, and briefed him on terms of Soviet support to Egypt and Syria and the economic impact of the war on Israel. 4. (Unclassified - JGO) Handcarried the Director's letter of 29 November 1973 to Chairman Hamilton, Near East and South Asia Subcommittee, House Foreign Affairs Committee, concerning a requested briefing on the recent alert of American military forces. I later met briefly with Marian Czarnecki, Chief of Staff, and delivered a copy of the Hamilton letter to him for Chairman Morgan. 5. (Internal Use Only - JGO) Received a call from 25X1 OBGI, who advised he will be meeting with members of the staff of the Joint Committee on Printing as a member of a Federal task force that issued a report a year ago concerning certain functions of the Joint Committee on Printing. He will advise us concerning the outcome of the meeting. (Secret - JGO) George Cary and I met with Chairman Lucien Nedzi, Intelligence Subcommittee, House Armed Services Committee, and Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel. As we entered, the Chairman held up this afternoon's paper and noted the prime headline concerning CIA use of newsmen. In brief, Nedzi advised he is not particularly interested in past problems concerning newsmen. His primary interest is our present situation. He has no problem with the use of newsmen as sources for intelligence information but apparently would find some cause for concern if they were used to put out information even if it was played into foreign press. We reviewed with the Chairman his request for advice concerning the President's statement in responding to questions before the Newspaper Editor's Association "that national security matters were not matters that should be investigated because there were some very highly sensitive matters involved, not only in Ellsberg but also another matter so sensitive that even Sen. Ervin and Sen. Baker have decided that they should not delve further into them. " This question was covered in part by the conversations with Cary and Maury relating to yesterday's Washington Star-News article concerning the plumbers' goal to hide spying on the Soviets. The Jack . Anderson leak of I land a sensitive projectiwere touched lightly. He was told we were continuing to review this whole matter that we are not satisfied that we know exactly what references the White House had in mind or what purpose is being served by the continual release of in orn ation relating to security leaks during the period in question. We also closed out his earlier request for information relating to the 5 November Aviation Week article "Soviet Poise Three-Front Global Drive. 11 Approved For Release 2005/08/24: CIA-RDP75B00380R000400140006-1 Approved For Release 2005/08/24: CIA-RDP75B00380R000400140006-1 Journal - Office of Legislative Counsel Page 5 Friday - 30 November 1973 12. OS, called and asked about the secure storage facilities for the Murphy Commission. DIA is interested in this because Senator Mike Mansfield (D. , Mont.) has asked for a copy of DIA's testimony before the Commission. I told that Thomas J.
