1. On 7 Apr 52, using its new long wave station, Radio Prague reported
a meeting of the employees of the Biogena National Corporation,
which was a demonstration against "American bacteriological warfare
in Korea".
2. Biogena is quite important as it is the only known
producer al antioiotacs in any of the Soviet Satellites. As early as
1951, Czechoslovakia was exporting penicillin to Poland, Hungary, and
Rumania.
3. Until about 1950, Biogena was not independent, but a part of the State
Health Institute (Statni Zdravotni Ustav), a very large organization
which centralized medical research and pharmaceutical production, but did
not actually engage in the treatment of patients. After World War II,
when the US supplied Czechoslovakia with equipment for making penicillin,
the State Health Insitute was responsible for the scientific work involved
50X1 in setting up the new penicillin factory in Roztoky u Prahy.

in 1950 the State Health Institute was reorganized and the name
E?C?hged to State Hygiene Institute (Statni Zdravotnicky Ustav). Some of
the departments, including Bligena, were given the status of independent
national corporations, and some of the work of the Instiute was transferred
to the military. Even so, the Institute remained under rigid supervision
with regard to security and it is still considered an organization 6f
first importante.

SECRET/SECURITY INFORMATION
For many years (and as late as August 1951) the headquarters and
some of the laboratories of the State-Institute of Health were
located in Prague-Kralovske Vinohrady? near the State VinohrsdY
Hospital (Statni Vinohradska Nemocnice). The Institute was made
up of Several two and three-story buildings and occupied an area
about the size of a city block. The main plant of Blogena.was
located in Roztoky u Prally, but even after the reorganization,
the management of Biogena remained on the premises of. the State
H iene Institute in Pra e-Kralovske Vinohrady./

More important than Dr Micochbva in the Biogena Corporation was
Dr (Thu) Malek, the responsible Communist Party Official in Biogena
who held the.title of Deputy Director. He is-the brother of the
well known Cranmunist, Dr Ivan Malek who is a professor of medicine
at the University of Prague.
