Approved For Fa State Department review completed 24j1500010015-9 OCI No. 1987/65 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY Office of Current Intelligence 6 September 1965 DIA review(s) compIPLLIGENCE MEMORANDUM Situation in Kashmir (Report- oT-b-Up-m , EDT) 25X1 88 1. The extent of the Indian advance toward Lahore is not yet clear, but the Indian forces do not appear to have been threatening the city as of 9:30 p.m. local time (12:30 EDT), The US Consul General there was reached by telephone from Karachi at that time and reported the city "quiet" and that sounds of firing had subsided. He refuted press reports that the Lahore airport, which is not far from the consulate, had been taken by the Indians. 2. Pakistani spokesmen claim to have turned back the Indian thrust toward Sialkot and driven the Indians from Pakistani territory in that sector of the front. They also report that the three prongs of the attack on Lahore have been contained just inside',the border. 25X1 inaian a ac consis e o somewhat more than two divisions that the attack force was from units regularly stationed along the border and that no advance buildup had been noted. India's 7th Infantry Division is normally stationed at Ferozepore, while the 15th Infantry Division is normally between Amritsar and Pathankot. These units are now backed up by the 4th and 6th Infantry Divisions and the 1st Armored Division. 4. New Delhi spokesmen provide few details of the battle in the Punjab, but tontine to claim that it is going well. The Indians report that they have succeeded in stoping the Pakistani thrust toward Akhnur in Kashmir, and that the attacking forces have been repulsed. They add that Pakistani tanks have been forced to withdraw from the action in Kashmir and proceed southward to meet the Indian threat in the Punjab. The relief of Akhnur and the deviation of the Pakistani attack from its course toward Jammu was almost certainly a major objective of the new Indian initiative. 5~1 1 Approved For Release 2005/04/28 : CIA-RDP79T00472AO01500010015-9 25X1 SECRET Approved For t ? p l e a - 72001500010015-9 5. In addition to declaring a state of emergency and calling for a blackout in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Karachi, Pakistan reportedly has called up all its reservists up to and including the rank of major. It will be some time before these reactivated troops can effectively be brought to bear, and they will probably have little impact upon course of the current clash. 6. Reports just coming in give further details of the course of todays encounter. An Indian Defense Ministry spokesman said Pakistani paratroops were dropped far behind Indian lines in the Punjab, according to press reports from New Delhi. They dropped in small groups near Patiala, station of the Indian 2nd Armored Brigade, and Pathankot, a rail terminus near the Kashmir- Punjab border. The reason for a paratroop strike at Patiala- Ambala area, over 140 miles inside India, is unclear unless it is designed to disrupt communication lines between New Delhi and the front. The reports of the paradrop are not confirmed by independent reporting. 7. A press report from Rawalpindi claims that the Pakistani Air Force downed 22 Indian fighters today while losing only two Pakistani aircraft. 25X1 Approved For Release 2005/04/28 : CIA-RDP79T00472AO01500010015-9 SECRET
