CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENGY
WASHINGTON, D.C. 20503
6 March 1973
Lt, General James C. Sherrill, USAF
Commander-in-Chief Alaskan Command
APO Seattle 98742
Dear General Sherrill:
Thank you very much for giving me Brian Garfield's
The One Thousand Mile War. I read it on the plane
coming home and found it extremely interesting . That
was a very rough fight (or series of fights) in a brutal
climate . The Aleutian battles never received their just
share of recognition but success there was one of the
essential keys to Japan's ultimate defeat. Also, had
these battles not been won, the overall fight against
Japan might have had a very different outcarne.
I was delighted to have a chance to meet you
during my visit to CINCPAC and greatly enjoyed not
only your company but the information about Alaska
and the problems there involved which you so genially
related over appropriate potations , I hope your
session at CINCPAC was successful and. that at least
some of the golf balls went in the proper direction or
into the proper holes .
When you next come to Washington, please give
me a call. My colleagues and I would be delighted to
have you out to the Agency as our guest for lunch.
Sincerely yours,
George A. Carver, Jr.
