SUBJECT: Conversation with Mr. Roland Paul, Former Counsel of the
Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee of U. S. Security
Agreements and Commitments Abroad
1. Received a call from Mr. Roland Paul, former Counsel of the
Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on U. S. Security Agreements and
Commitments Abroad, who is now practicing law in New York City.
Mr. Paul told me that Channel 5, WNEW, New York City, had given rather
extensive coverage last evening to the charges against the Agency set forth
in the McCoy book "The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia. " New York
Times has also given coverage to these same charges over the last week
or two. He is reminded of the testimony by Mr. Helms before the Committee
at a time when no one was interested in the drug business of the successes
in dealing with the Meos and in conversion of the Meos in several areas to
other cash crops and away from opium. Paul said he has direct access to
Channel 5 personnel and knows Seymour Hersh, who is one of the writers for
the Times on this subject. He intends taking no action but wanted to let us
know that if he could be of assistance in this fashion, he would be pleased to
do so. I thanked him for his generous offer. No further action or followup
calls are required.
