Approved ForIease 2002/08/06: CIA-RDP68B007 ?4000200150036-5 SECRET IDEA-0746-67 Copy_of 12 December 1967 25X1 MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD SUBJECT: S-1010 Pilots Protective Assembly, Evaluation at Det G REFERENCE: Memo For the Record, IDEA-0710-67, dtd 20 Nov 67 and attached report. 1. A cockpit evaluation of the S-1010 prototype PPA was conducted in U-2R #1 at Detachment G on 15 November 1967. Pressurized and unpressurized mobility and vision were evaluated as were modifications made to the prototype S-1010 as recommended in the referenced report. The integrated parachute harness was evaluated for body position and comfort while suspended. 2. The attached report, prepared byl at 25X1 Detachment G, summarizes the results of these evaluations. Photographs with explanatory notes are also attached. Additional comments, not included in the attached report, are as follows: a. Lower Field of Vision: The redesign of the bailer bar since the evaluations reported in the referenced memo, has eliminated the restriction to the lower visual field previously encountered. b. Hold-Down Assembl : A completely new assembly was designed and installed on the S-1010, and was found to be completely satisfactory for all conditions. c. Microphone: A Gemini type boom microphone was installed on the S-1010 and found to be-more satis- factory than the previous type. d. Urine Collection Device: A better method for donning the U.C.D. was evaluated and found to be a considerable improvement over previous methods. The entire urine elimination system in the S-1010 is now considered to be far superior to those used in any other full pressure suit system. . r% 1 6ECRET Approved For Release 2002/08/06 : CIA-RDP68B00724R000200150036-5 25X1 Approved Fc elease 2002/08/06 : CIA-RDP68BO07 000200150036-5 SECRET D IDEA-0746-67 Page 2 3. On 16 November 1967 the S-1010 prototype PPA was demonstrated to and discussed with a group of project pilots, test pilots and operations representatives. The general response was very favorable, both with respect to the entire assembly and the specific improvements made over previous PPA's. A very favorable attitude was demonstrated regarding use of the U.C.D. which represents an important hurdle to overcome before acceptance of such a system can be expected. 4. The original copies of both the previous and the present reports and photographs are maintained on file in ASD/R&D/OSA for permanent reference.
