CIA Director Stansfield Turner
got two nicks recently, one from
the White House and the other from
the, House Armed Services Com-
mittee.
At least one White House execu-
tive suggested..to him that his ex-
pressed worries about verifying the
strategic arms limitation treaty now
being ~ negotiated might be. -inter-'
as stemming from his desire
to have more spy satellites built
and put under his command.
The. other nick came from Rep.
Robin Beard (R-Tenn.) who, during
a closed hearing of the House com-
mittee,, established that Turner did
not know that the- Soviet Union bad
test-fired cruise missiles from the
Backfire bomber. It turned out the
.report of this was in Turner's in-
basket, however, and he had not
yet read it.
