I. INTRODUCTION
This report describes and locates Soviet. and Satellite ammunition
and unidentified storage installations employing maximum security
measures and having some form of blast protection. Evidence of multi-
ple security fencing or a combination of single fencing and guard towers
and guard posts are considered maximum security measures. A com-
prehensive loot: at all such install0ions is provided rather than a de-
tailed description of each one. An attempt has been made to identify
possible patterns in Soviet military storage construction.
The material comprising this report is based on CHESS photography
obtained on nine missions flown over the USSR and the Satellites during
Since this coverage is limited to a small portion of the Soviet
Bloc a completely definitive study of Soviet storage practices is not
possible.

IV. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
A total of 87 storage installations with blast protected buildings and
maximum security protection were observed. Data tabulation sheets and
photographs of these installations are included with this report. Figures
2 and 3 are maps showing their geographic locations. The chart, Figure
1, compares security measures employed at these installations.
Functionally, 53 are ammunition storage installations, 25 are un-
identified, and nine are probable special weapons storage installations
associated with major airfields in the USSR.
Age-wise, 25 installations were constructed before or during World
War II, postwar construction can be confirmed for 50, leaving 12 for
which date of construction cannot be determined. Data on time of con-
struction, by country, is tabulated below:
Date of construction USSR Rumania Poland Hungary Czech
25X6 Before or during WWII 12 1 6 3 0
Since WWII 26 4 6 5 1
Unknown 1 1 4 1 5
TOTAL 39 6 16 9 6
Comparison of the 87 installations fails to provide any indication of
an over-all construction or layout pattern. On the contrary, local to-
pography and numercus other contributing factors seem to have deter-
mined construction methods rather than any planned procedure. However,
there are three significant exceptions to this over-all generalization.
-6-
TOP SECRET CHESS
Approved For Release 20005Fi~fP~854VA000300130Q11A- R 3 -- 57
One exception concerns the nine loading
and storage installations associated with major airfields. Four of these
installations, labeled the "Stryy-type", are located adjacent to Stryy,
Karankut, Sol'tsy, and Minsk/Machulishche airfields. The layout of
these four installations is practically identical. The other five, labeled
the "Orsha-type", are located several miles each from the airfields at
,
Orsha, Bobruysk, Siauliai, Baranovichi, and Bykhov. These five are
practically identical in layout, but distinctly different from the "Stryy-
type" .
A second exception concerns two especially significant installations
Although one of these in-
stallations is substantially cloud covered, and both are under construction,
they appear to be strikingly similar. These installations and reports
covering them in detail are: 9.5 nm WSW of Mozhaysk, USSR, CIA/
HTA-Rl-57; and S-nm W of Valday, USSR, CIA/HTA-J R1-57. 25X16
A third possible exception involves three
located within a 17 nm radius of Brno, Czechoslovakia, as follows:
3 NM NE of Blansko; 5 nun NNW of Vyskov; and 3.5 nm S of Ivancice.
In additon to having the general similarities of Group A, all three have
the following characteristics in common:
Three to five large warehouse buildings blast-protected by woods
TOP SECRET CHESS

HTA-R3-57
Two to four small buildings with elaborate revetments
A single paved road terminating in a small fork
Over-all size and shape similar
Location in wooded areas around Brno
Enclosed by a single security fence.
Although no over-all pattern in construction of installations having
maximum security and blast protection has been identified, there is
some evidence of certain trends. The post-World War U installations
are generally much smaller than the old storage sites and have fewer
buildings. However, many of the old ones have been vastly improved
and reconstructed by the Soviets since World War II. This is true in
the Satellites as well as in the USSR. It also seems to be a general
practice to utilize natural features for blast-protection wherever possible
rather than to construct elaborate blast walls or revetments.
Information on an additional 72 installations (26 in the USSR and 46
in the Satellites) make up an appendix to this report. While these in-
stallations met only certain portions of the requirement their significance
was considered sufficient to justify inclusion of the completed research.
Data tabulation sheets and photographs of these installations are included,
and Figures 4 and 5 are maps showing their geographic distribution.
