Approved For'eas 701500010028-5 25X1 8 t9 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY Office of Current Intelligence 11 September 1965 INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM The India-Pakistan Situation (Report - As o : 0 a.m. EDT) 1. There are no fresh reports on the military situation along the border between India and West Pakistan. The Indian drive toward Sialkot apparently has been stalled near that city. One of the Indian 25X1 attacks aimed at Lahore is claimed by Pakistan to have been halted at Wa ah close to the Indo-Pakistani border, The Pakistanis apparently still have the edge tar er south in the fighting near Ferozepur, where they were last reported on the Indian side of the border. 2. The Indian radio on 11 September is still reporting Pakistani air activity against targets in Assam. It claimed three Pakistani air strikes against the airfield at Gauhati, in the state of Assam, and three unsuccessful air raids on a vital bridge across the Brahmaputra River just west of Gauhati. 3. The Pakistani domestic radio on 11 September emphasized the blandness of the just completed talks between Pakistani officials and UN Secretary General U Thant. Foreign Minister Bhutto told newsmen that the Secretary General had not made any ""crystalized proposals" for ending the conflict, but he described the exchange of ideas as "very useful." The radio said U Thant stated before leaving Rawalpindi that he had put forward certain ideas and suggestions. Presi- dent Ayub is "understood" to have explained to U Thant that a cease-fire in Kashmir was only the beginning, not the end, of the argument.
