Greek Foreign Minister Panayotis Pipinelis, who delivered a speech at the UN
General Assembly last night, :pointed out the "happy developments" in the Turkish-
Greek relations on the subject:''of Cyprus anvil said, "I have great confidence that
Turkey and Greece ;gill regain their former role in this region of the world
with the understanding prevc'iling in these countries between 1930-1952. This
situation will be for the good of international community and above all in the
.interests of the peoples of the two countries."
2 No Soviet attempt to repul to hnvi.!~nti_on in Straits: MILLIYET (Ankara) -
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Information Department gave information yester-
day about news reports that the Russians would capture the Straits under the
guise of regulating navigation in them and said that no report had been received
on this subject. "The Soviet Union has nade no attempt to regulate navigation in
the Straits," it was revealed.
According to the Ministry of Forei?-i Affairs it is possible that the Soviet
Union discussed the subject with the Turkish delegation which visited Russia and
may have brought up the question of safer and better navigation in the Straits.
According to the Montreux Convention, it is Turkey's duty to regulate navigation
in the Straits an,i it is out of the question for any other country to interfere.
FIU RIYET (Ankara-H.`:) -,,Foreign Ministry spokesman Oktay Igcen said yesterday
that the NATO Ministerial Council would meet in November instead of December this
year. No information was given about the reason for this change, but it is
learned from competent authorities that it could be concerned with the political
situation after the invasion of Cz,echoslo"rakia and the military balance between
NATO and Warsaw Pact countries.
3. Tito assigns Begi.c as Ambassador to Turkey: CUMIIURIYET (Belgrade) - President
Tito of Yugoslavia has assigned Muhittin Begi; as his country's Ambassador to
Ankara. Muhittin Begi.c is 50 and a member of the Yugoslav Communist Party
Central Committee. Begig who participated in the national liberation war from
the very first day, held important military and political positions during
World War II.
4. Turkish official caught s2yin in NATO: HUPRIYET (Ankara-Cuneyt Arc.ayurelc)
The Chief Financial Controller at the N:ArO head uarters in Brussels, Nahit ILare;
has been arrested on charges of espionage. Inre was employed as financial
counselor of the Turkish Embassy in Rome before he entered NATO in 19,67. He was
caught real-handed in Brussels giving secret ducu
