A new steel works known as Plant No. 47 of the Vitkovice Klement Gottwald Iron Works National Enterprise, in Ostrava covers an area of 1 200 x 700 meters. It is sur- rounded by a fence.. partly,brick and partly wire, 180 cm. high. 2. There are about 6,000 employees, of whom about 2,000 are women. The number of brigade workers and prisoners is not known. Three shi.fts are worked. 3. Electricity is supplied by the Vitkovice power station over a power line carrying 5,000 volts. 4. P$g iron for processing comes from the Vitkovice blast furnaces. Part of the production is sent to other unidentified factories for further processing. Pig iron is manufactured into hard steel of good quality. Production includes shaped iron, steel plates.of 1 to 50 mm. (armor plating thickness), razor blades, wire of a maximum digmeter of 20 mm., springs, and material for automobile wheels. The Five- Year Plan is being fulfilled 100%. There are always two men on guard duty at the gatekeeper's post. Small groups of militia are on guard, but only in the evening. Morale is poor and there is dissatisfaction with wages. Workers mostly live in the neighborhood and eat at home. Political instruction takes place twice a week for 'about an hour. There are other meetings at irregular times. SECRET - U. S.
