minor road construction in the India-China frontier area northeast of New Delhi
(Figure 1). This report, together with NPIC Report presents the 25X1
disposition of Indian defenses along the entire India- ina border between Nepal
and Indian-controlled Jammu and Kashmir.
The seven military facilities include a total of 1,125 barracks/storage/
support buildings and 29 explosives storage buildings or bunkers (Figure 2 and
Table 1). The facilities appear to be defensive, are connected by good motor-
able roads, and with the exception of Rishikesh, are all located in the eastern
portion of the area.
Five major roads enter this mountainous area; three of them extend to the
vicinity of the China border (Figure 2). One road enters the mountains at
Rishikesh (30-06N 078-18E) and continues generally northeast along the Alaknanda
and Dhauliganga river valleys to within 1 nautical mile (nm) of the China bordror
at 30-51N 079-58E. The second road enters the mountains at Haldwani (29-12N
079-32E) and continues northeast to within 28 nm of the China border at 30-05N
080-17E. The third road enters the area at Tanakpur (29-o4N 080-06E) and con-
tinues north-northeast along the Nepal border to within 24 nm of China at
29-58N o8o-35E
Five sections of road are observed under construction in the area and are
shown in Figure 2.
The only major military airfield near this area is at Barielly, located
approximately 50 nm to the south of the area.
No military activity or roads are observed in the western portion of Nepal.
No Chinese military facilities or associated logistics activity are observed
within 20 nm of the border between Tibet and India and Nepal.
