B. Syrian press and radio continuing bitter attack on Nuri for
alleged coup plot against Syria.
1. Anti-Government demonstrations quelled--momentarily at
least--by tough measures.
2. Anti-Nuri feeling in Iraq still high, however, and further
demonstrations are likely.
3. Army discontent is especially rife among junior officers.
D. These internal difficulties will probably keep Iraqis busy at
home.
III. In Jordan, Nabulsi cabinet has announced that abrogation of treaty
with UK is one of Government's major objectives.
C. Although Nuri government shaky,
he intends to ride out storm.
B. British are doling out treaty subsidy on weekly basis: any
sudden break would leave Jordan's army unpaid.
C. Question for Jordan is: who will pick up tab?
1. Hussain has clearly implied he would like US to do so.
2. Other pressures, however, are for exclusively "Arab" aid,
