The checkerboard pattern 25X1D similar to that at Cheng-hai, Lung-chi and Ching-yang appeared on 25X1D photography. On the runway was receiving a final surface material, probably slurry, over the checkerboard. This surfacing appeared to be 25X1D completed on 25X1D photography. As of no other change had been noted. Several sheds were still scattered along the edge of the runway. The runway is aligned in an NE-WW direction and measures 6800' long and 200 wide. The runway appears to be constructed of mud, gravel, and crushed rock, similar to those constructed by the Chinese for the U.S. Air Force during World War II. For location of taxiways and revetments, etc0 see enclosure I. An 850? long over run strip is being added at the west end of the runway RWETMENTS 25X1D As of there were 28 earthen aircraft revetments built. There appear to be several more under construction. These are horseshoe -7-'--thaped revetments with a jet blast break in the rear. The fourteen revetments S-E-C-R-E-T NOFORN 2, Approved For Release 2001/08/13 : CIA-RDP78T05694A000200340001-9 Approved For Release 2001/08/13 : CIA-RDP78T05694A000200340001-9 S-E-C-R-E-T NOFORN at the western most end Of the field have an average measurement of 1150 across and 900 deep while the remaining fourteen are 9C wide and 800 deep. The taxiways are now in the same phase of construction as the run- way. BUILDINGS Construction is underway at several buildings near the north edge of the field. The largest of these at 341468 measures 800x400 and has a small control tower-like structure on top. Located in the revetment area are several sheds, the largest measuring 600 square. This building is located at the end of one of the revetment taxiways. A probable gun testing range is being constructed also at the end of one of the revetment taxiways. STORAGE There are a number of storage facilities located N. of the airfield. These are located along a series of loops branching off the road leading from the airfield to the Nan-tat - Foochow road. Located at 340484, approximately 35009 north of the airfield on the largest of these loops is a probable.P.O.L. storage .area. This facility consists of 19 structures spaced along the road and partially bunkered into the hills. On each structure are 12-14 small dots which could be either small individual tanks or 25X1D hatches into buried tanks. photography revealed excavation being carried on where these structures now stand0 coverage was the first photography that clearly showed the black dots. The structures are 1500 to 3500 apart and there is good road access available to the air- field and to Foochow. There are several small sheds in the area and one 1350x300 vehicle shelter-type shed in the loop area. 25X1D S-E-C-R-E-T 1"OFORN 3. Other buildings in this erea north of the field apparently are miscellanious storage buildings. See enclosure 1 for locations of the larger buildings. There is an additional revetted storage area about four miles (straight- line) r,SE' of the Nan-tai airfield, located at /425436. It is just NE of the road leading from Nan-tai city to the ferry point opposite Ma-tou-wei. It is along the road leading from Nan-tai-tao to tibia-yang? The, road 25X1D between these two towns was not on the photography. It was on the 25X1D photos as about a second class. However. the 25X1D coverage shows part of the road improved and a new addition winding behind a ridge along which revetments and buildings are in the process of construction. NA VI AID At 29845), 10,C009 west of the west end of the airfield and directly in line with the runway is a beacon type direction finder, This site consists of two small sheds and two antennae. The antennae are 215, apart and also aligned directly with the runway. Scars on the ground radiate out from a central point and are-110# long. These indicate the presence of antenna grounds. No inner marker beacon has been recognized. TRUCK PARK Two truck parks are located at the west end of the field. Both parks carry a complement of 12-15 open bed trucks.
