In late June a number of Soviet and Chinese Ccmmunist instructors and. 3,000 students were at the Chinese Communist National Defense University, u'ilich was established in the spring of 1950 by the Revolutionary Military Council at the former site of the Chahar Training Corps of the Nationalist Pacification Corps in Kalgan. About 2,100 of these students were selected from middle schools and colleges and the rest from the army. The university has the following departments: national defense engineering, national defense economics, and national defense medicine. The honorary head of the school is M0 Tse-tung, the honorary deputy head is 01W Te. The actual head of the school is LPI1 Kung-vu ( 14 )l, a 61 year old native of Soochow, Kiangsu, and a graduate of the Tokyo flaparial University, class of 19110 He joined the Chinese Communists in the fall of 1945 and was a former member of the Nationalist Congress and head of a news agency. 2. Since early July authorities in ':enchou are conducting an intensive campaign to recruit students and young workers for a Chinese Camiunist I.4ilitary and Political Academy. By 16 July 820 had applied and of these 98 students and 52 young workers had already qualified for the academy. 3. In accordance with an edict from the Government Council, the Bureau of Education, Shanghai, in early July started to assign jobs to all June 1951 middle school and college graduates who were not continuing their education. This practice will be followed for all future graduating classes02 1a In June 1951, 1,300 students were graduated from Shanghai middle schools and colleges.
