PROGRAM Jack Anderson STATION WEAM Radio Mutual Network DATE January 14, 1983 9:00 AM CITY Washington, DC Top Secret Report on Soviet Satellite JACK ANDERSON: A Soviet satellite carrying nuclear materials is plummeting to earth. It could cost innocent lives. Here is the Inside Story. The United States may soon be hit by a Soviet nuclear strike. A Russian satellite carrying nuclear materials is plummeting to earth. The odds are that the satellier will fall into the ocean but it could hit a populated area, potentially killing hundreds of people. Now let me tell you what you haven't heard. The falling object is a Soviet spy satellite used to track the, Navy as they sail the waters of the globe. Let me quote from a top secret CIA report. These satel- lites have been able to identify coastline ships and prominent terrain features. The radar on these-satellites are able to detect ships the size of a destroyer when the weather is good and aircraft carriers when the weather conditions are bad. Well, the Soviets say the satellite will burn up before it hits the ground but US experts disagree. And they have a team on alert ready to rush into the impact area and clean up the nuc- lear debris.
