5. Met with Mr. Ralph Preston, House Appropriations
Committee staff, anc rought him up-to-date on the status of the "Ervin
amendment" now pending before the House Judiciary Committee. Preston told
me that it would be his suggestion that Mr. Helms call Chairman Mahon if
it becomes necessary to have Chairman Mahon talk to Chairman Geller about
this bill.
I briefed Preston on Soviet forces near the Chinese border and two
pending major Soviet space events.
6. Met with Mr. Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel,
House Armed Services ommY ee, and briefed him on the status of the Ervin
bill amendment pending before the House Judiciary Committee. Slatinshek
recommended that we await further developments in the handling of the bill
by the House Judiciary Committee before any further consideration of
intercession by Chairman Hebert in the matter.
