On 17 March 1982,1 Deputy Director/Office of African 25X1 and Latin American Analysis rie e the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Inter-American Affairs on the current situation in El Salvador and the assistance being provided by Nicara ua. Barnes (D., MD) was present to open the briefing. He left shortly after learning that the briefing would be the same as he had received from Admiral Inman when he briefed the House Leadership on 15 March. Present from the Subcommittee for all or part of the briefing were: 25X1 Gus Yatron (D., PA) Robert Lagomarsino (R., CA) Samuel Gejdenson (D., CT) George Berdes Diane LaVoy, HPSCI staff, and Belden Bell, State, also attended. 4. began by presenting a detailed analysis of the Command and Control system employed by the guerrillas. He characterized it as sophis- ticated and he outlined the guerrilla groups and their areas of operations. He then listed the actions that the guerrillas plan to take to disrupt the 28 March elections. In a brief question and answer session, the Members asked about the percent of eligible people who were expected to vote, international observers for the election, and the recent cache of weapons found in San Jose.
