4, Since the East German goverment needs unblocked currency accounts,, the articles
which bring in the most of such currency are concentrated in the DG'p/. In this
manner the DWV constitutes the free domestic economy of East Germany. As already
mentioned,, the DWY operates under the guidance of the Central Committee of the
SED and is in no way subordinate or responsible to the Ministry for Foreign and
Domestic Trade. The EWV handles predominantly export matters which are to be
carried out within the framework of the >aconomic Plane as well as special matters
for certain products within the framework of the Plan. In order to obtain the
desired currency accounts,, the DKV exports mainly high quality (hochprozentig)
fertilizers, sugar and 00polygraphic18 machines. The DWV exports only ammonium
sulphate to China- nartly via in Moscow. Fertilizers are also exported

indication of an increase in the armament of East Germany, in contrast to the
year 1952 when lead from Yugoslavia was imported via Tangier and seamless Mannes-
mann pipe was brought into Wismar or Rostock'
