ROME (AP) - An Italian
parachutist reportedly has told
authorities that 300 employes of
the North Atlantic Treaty Or-
r ganization were involved in a
Soviet spy ring being estab-
lished at every NATO: base in
Europe.
Those involved were said to
be civilians and military per-
sonnel from a number of na-
itions, including the United
States.
The civilian parachutist, Gi
a Rinaldi, and his wife, An-
ga Maria, were questioned for
300 in NATO Called Red Spies
more than three hours in Turin
yesterday by a deputy state
attorney, Guido Netti-Modona.
They were formally cbarged
earlier in the day with spying
for the Soviet Union.
A source present at the ques-
tioni said authorities were
b ngelieved to have arrested sus-
pects in Greece, Cyprus, Swit-
zerland and Spain.
Netti-Modona and an Italian
defense ministry spokesman
declined to comment.
The informant said the es-
plonage organization focused on
NATO bases mostly in southern
Europe and the Mediterranean.
He said it was not believed to
have been far along in develop.
ment.
The source said Rinaldi listed
cover names for several .NATO
officers and "a number of real
names" of persons involved.
A radio receiver and commu-
nications, codes were found in
the Rnnaldis' possession, police
said.
Yuri Pavlenko, a Soviet Em.
bassy attache said to have been
a member of the spy network,
left for Moscow yesterday.
There were unconfirmed report
he had been expelled by Italiar
authorities. With him were hit
wife and 6-year-old son.
Investigators said they caught
Pavlenko with papers and mi
erofl ms at a rural letter dror
near Rome Monday.
Police said another Russian

staff member was also im.
plicated. He was identified as
Yuri Goudar and his where.
