Approved For Re, sse 209W 1A-RDP81-00706R0l '200020053-7 11 October 1948 7769th Military Intelligence Service (Austria), Office Director Intelligence, United States Forces Austria, APO 777 Date Visiteds 15-18 August 1948 ORGANIZATION 1. 7769th Military Intelligence Service (Austria) (MIS/.A) is under the control of the ODI, USFA. The Headquarters and one detachment of MIS/Aare located in Vienna. It also has another detachment in Salzburg, Austria which, in turn, has a sub detachment in Linz, Austria.. 2. The main function of MIS/A is the Interrogation of displaced persons, refugees, and returned prisoners of war for intelligence information. This information is compiled in the form of narrative reports and included in the Bi-V{eekly Intelligence Summary of the ODI. CAPTURED DOCUNTS 3. The majority of the captured doewnents in the Austrian Zone were shipped a year ago to the Document Sectioh, ECIC. The document center at Linz, Austria has been dissolved. 4. The remaining documents in the Austrian zone are listed in an inventory produced by MIS/A, dated 9 April 1948. These documents are all in the custody of MIS/A and consist of maps and reference material, most of which is available in Washington, D. C. 5. MIS/A has very little current Russian language material. Its sources for what books and periodicals it has are the Globus Buchhandl~ ui and the International Buch Verla in Vienna. Both of these book stores are, in effect, Russian controlled outlets, the latter being the Vienna representative for the International Book Company (Nezhdunarodnaya Kniga) of Moscow. The Moscow newspapers and the primary Satellite dailies are bought at the local newsstands. JCS review(s) completed. At the date of this party's visit, it had not been received. These cards will be of great value to the interrogators as a means of corroborating the information collected through interrogations. (One copy each of all available ICF cards were packed and shipped to ODI, USFA by FD B, CIA in early September this year. 7. Interest was expressed by MIS/A in receiving the IC cards and the CIA press and periodical abstracts as a means of furnishing reference and current background material to the members of the detachment. RECOMMENDATIONS 8. The distribution of all future ICF cards should be increased to include the ODI, USFA. 9. One set of one copy each of all available IC cards should be made up from the surplus now at FDB and sent to the 013I, USFA. In addition, the distribution of all future IC cards should be increased to include the ODI, USFA. 10. Distribution of CIA press and periodical abstracts should be increased to include the ODI, USFA.
