The testing pool attached to the Odessa Institute of Merchant Marine Engineers
was disassembled and destroyed during the German and Rumanian occupations.
Rebuilding was begun in 1944 and oompleted in 194. The pool is under the
supervision of the Institute's Department of Ship Construction Theory headed
by Prof pavlanko, DOotor of Technical Sciences. Technical problems of ship
seaworthiness, partioularly those of roll and water resistance to movement are
studied here, and tests are carried out for all types of cargo ships as well
as naval vessels. Considerable work was dons in the study of construction
principles affecting ship speed.
(b) There is a testing poo1 attached to the Leningrad Shii Construction Institute.
Assistant Prof (docent) Wirlanetti? Candidate of Technical &lioness, im in
charge of ship-model testing. Investigations are carried on here in6problems
of umainkability, safety fredborad, seaworthiness and cavitation of screw pro-
pellors. Special attention was given to the solution of construction problems
affecting ship speed.
The testing basin attached to the Gorki institute of Merchant Marine Engineers
is under the direction of Prof aba irid4, Here problems are investigated
concerning draft vessels (the tugboat fleet), propelling agents lsorewa and
wheels) on river vessels, and the Volga River's resistanoe to ship movement
during low water. Important tests were carried out on problems of vessel
movement dm:the surface of the water in the manner of hydroplanes or water
sleds. Investigations were also made at this basin on problems of backing of
river vessels. All types of river vessels were tested in this basin: tugboats
passenger ships, cargo ships, and non-self-propelled ships.
