MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: RFE - RL Funding
1, In meeting with Mr. Ralph Preston today, he told me
the Chairman had called him over yesterday afternoon to brief him
on the morning meeting on the Agency budget. The Chairman
appeared to take it all on board with no question and, in fact, he
seemed satisfied on all counts with Mr. Preston's report.
2. Regarding RFE and RL monies for the coming year,
however, Mr. Mahon stated that he did not want these m n'
e oes no want t is item available to members to use as a
springboard for discussion of how the monies have been handled
by the Committee in the past,
3. I told Mr, Preston that I would report the Chairman's
desire immediately, I also refreshed Mr, Preston's recollection
that in the event other funding sources from the Congress or
whatever are not found, with result that the Radios would have to
be closed down, the Agency would still be obligated in about the
same amounts of closeout costs. It is Mr, Preston's
opinion that, fort e moment at least, this problem of closeout
costs will have to await further resolution of the question of
funding for continuation of the Radios,
