Soviet Trade with Bulgaria

1. A Maritima=Agency, directed by Soviet officers dressed in ;civilian clothing, maino ::'.,!,..
tains strict control over all goods which are imported from and exported to the USSR
by sea. The agency is located in an apartment in the Musala dsctiOnL-of Varna.
2. A Commission of three or four Soviet agronomists is stationed in Bulgaria for the
purpose of controlling canned goods and insuring the cleanliness and proper canning
methods of this merchandise. If fruit, such as grapes, apricots, etc.., is slightly
damp and gives off a bad odor,, it is immediately treated with oxygen. A cold-storage
room for barrel?: of;. fresh._ch.eese which is to be exported is located in the vicinity
of the loading quay in Varna.
The petroleum which Soviet tankers bring to Bulgaria is unloaded into a large depot
located in the vicinity of the Sesevmets Textile Factory, across from the Navy
barracks at Varna. The petroleum is unloaded, with great efficiency, by means of
oil pipe-lines t'i?ihtheikshias to the tanks on shone. The storage tanks are located
one kilometer from the port in a "forbidden" zone. The tankers return empty to
the Soviet Union.
ZI.. In 1951, eight or 10 ships transported cattle to the USSR.
5. In 1950,,. a large amount of cement was sent to tiOdaaaa. on seven or eight ships of
9,.000 tons each. in 1951, only four of these ships left for Odessa.
6. In 1951, canned fruit (fruit pulp) in barrels weighing 200 kilograms each were also
sent to the Soviet Union. The fruit was from the interior of Bulgaria.

7. A new large wharf has been constructed behind the old passport building, where an
old quay is located. The new quay is approximately eight meters wide and 1,9500-2,,000

meters long. To permit construction of the quay, it was necessary, to tear down the
repair' yard for boats and motor-sailing boats. In 1951s divers put down large stone
blocks.

The Explosives Factory near Varna
$. The road which leads to the Peynardzhik Explosives Factory is very steep and supplies
are transported to it by means of 15-20 cart convoys. The road crosses i iron bridge
before arriving at the factory. Access, to this zone is strictly forbidden.
9. The explosives produced at the factory are sent to the port by carts and trucks.
Sometimes the explosives are loaded directly on railroad cars and sent toward the
interior of Bulgaria.
