An enlargement by 7 meters on both sidea of the east-west taxiway was scheduled. The concrete thickness of the enlarged portions was to be 15 em. In mid-August. excavation work en the western end of the taxiway was started The narrow-stripe on the karthern and southern ends of the A/B connecting lane were also to be widened by 7 meters. The cables on the lighting had been removed on both construction sites. on rudder units were parked at the eastern end of the field. About 28 to 32 Il-28s or U-Il-.28s, 3. Until mid-August, the occupation of Gloss Doelln airfield remained unchanged. 1. At 1845 on 28 July 1955, one shipment arrived at Templin railroad station. This shipment had come from the direction of Bberewalde and was consigned to Gross Doelln airfiedl. he shipment consisted of 25 trucks, 10 tank trucks 10 boxcars, 5 of which d personnel wearing black-bordered blue epaulets, while the contof the other 5 boxcars was undetermined. The personnel was leaded on the trucks and tank trucks and then moved in the,& direction of Vogelsabg. At 0800 on 3 August, one shipment which came from the direction of Bberswalde arrived at Templin railroad station and was unloaded at Gross Doelln. The shipment consisted of 15 boxes] sr carrying personnel who wore black-bordered blue epaulets, and,20 flatearsdleaded with trucks and tank trucks. It 25X1 appeared that this shipment had not come from a long distance. 2. At 1600 on 17 August, the fellowing shipments arrived with the regular freight train at Vogelsang railroad stations 5 boxcars, apparently loaded with ammunition since these cars and two boacars carrying personnel25X1 wearing black-bordered blue epaulets. At about 1700, these cars were shunted to Gross Doelln. In addition to the shipment mentioned, several shipments with gravel and other building materials were dispatched to Gross Doelln 25X1 daily. 1 Mofty completed and conat;ruotion Building No IV ii the ammunition depot was J work-on Buildings Nos V through VIII was. started. The walls were encased. On all other buildings, roofing work and concreting of cellar floors was, done. The following transformer stations were under construction: 1 station located in the center of Forest District No 197 in the extension of the taxiway; 1 station located at thde of Forest District No 154 in the extension of the taxiway; 1 station located at Forest District No 217 near Building XIIZ; 1 station located on the concrete road at the northern edge of Forest District No 162, between fuel depot No I and the Vietmannsdorf - Gross Doelln road. 1 station at Forest District No 100 on the A/B connecting lane; 1. emergency power supply/diesel station located at the southwestern corner of Forest District No 159. The stations mentioned above. were underground constructions. The concrete floor of each was about 80 cm thick. 1 transformer station was located west of Building XXIV at Forest District No 122. This station was an above-ground construction. A fire department was under construction opposite to Building XXI in the southwestern corner of Forest District loo '160. This fife department was a solid building, about 10 x 20 meters, without cellar and'with a b*ick-covered' roof. A new concrete road, 7 meters wide, was under construction. The new road was scheduled to extend from the quartering billets at Forest District No 126 as far as the Gross Doelln - Doelln Krug road. The road was nearly completed. The concrete was 15 cm thick. 5 25, 7. Prior to early August, construction work at Gross Doelln airfield progressed slowly because of shortage of materials. During the last two weeks of the period under review, material shipments increased, This increase resulted in a continuation of construction work and starting of work on new construction projects. But no considerably progress was made due to insufficient organizat lack of personnel, and low work discipline * MMOMMEM lto heavy rainfallsa building was ab a ors iong work was done an the heavy f m3 idati to ILLEGIB Approved For Release 2008/10/29: CIA-RDP80-0081 OA008200960003-6 Approved For Release 2008/10/29: CIA-RDP80-0081 OA008200960003-6 The Soviets required a special cement quality ("400 B") for concreting of foundations and underground rooms. So far, this special quality could apparently not be procured. Encasing work for concreting of the foundations in very deep excavations was stopped. The building was scheduled to be equipped with'several above-ground floors and was presumably to house the flight control station. Building No 14, located about"300 meters north of the ma*- runway at Forest District No 217. The bri*,1 had a tent roof and a tower consisting of round timber. This roof was to guarantee a constant temperature, since this building had no false floor. The flooring consisted of concrete and was about in line with the level. The main entrance was in the middle of the northern front side. Behind this entrance there was a small vestibule with doors to the large inside room, which had seven windows each on the eastern and western sides and four windows each on the northern and southern sides. Another door was seen in the eastern portion of the southern front side. A cellar was located under the southeastern portion of the transformer station. This cellar was about 3.5 meters deep and measured 3 x 7 metrirs. Steps led from the outer aide of the eastern wall to the cellar. The floor, ceiling and walls were covered with concrete, about 20 cm thick. Two superjacent pits, each measuring about 30 x 40 cm, led in an angle of 45 degrees to the inside room. Emergency generator, in the southeastern corner of Forest District No 161 and in the southwestern corner if Forest District No 159, various small square buildings called "Diesel - Strom - Notspationen" ($iesel power emergency stations) were under construction. An open container consisting of autogenously v0 dad iron platesir was erected without supports in an open trench. The iron plates measured 1 x 2 meters and were 7 cam thick The container was 3 meters deep. A welder who had worked on this container stated that the material used was of poor quality. The purpose of the tank has not yet been determined. It was observed that 6 tubes were laid from the e&at into the container. Each tube was about 8 cm thick sloped and'ended 20 to 30 am ab ground level. It has not been observed if these tubes were scheduled to extend from the container to another place or if they were scheduled to be equipped with hose couplings. The numbers of buildings mentioned above is the official numbering used at the construction site. 7 Until about 20 August,. preliminary work for the widening of the taxiway was done. The gra was removed on a strip, 7 meters wide and 20 cm deep, on both sides of the main taxiway, on both connecting lanes between runway ends and taxiway and on the taxiway leading to connecting lane A/B. On 25 August, a Soviet major inspected the construction work. He ordered the suspension of extension work. 3 10. A red-white wind sock was observed between runway-and taxiway just east of the western connecting lane, 11. Six AA gun emplacements were constructed about 400 meters southwest of the western runway end. No guns were observed there until 19 August. 12. One day in August, 46 tank trucks of normal sizes and I tank semitrailer were observed at the parking lot northeast of the cantonment. It was be possible, that more than 46 tank trucks were available there. The following is a correction to a previous description if the semitrailer: The front aide of the trailer was vertical and sloped to the right and, . A ladder was observed in the middle of the left side. This ladd opening on the upper side of the tank. Another opening was obs the hollow space in the rear side. No other details could. be identified. 13. During the second half of August, several cable.tsenches had been dug. 10 The following air activity and aircraft were observed at Gross Doelln airfield between 23 and 29 August: 23 August. Before landing, a part of a anding gear of this plane could not be lowered. The plane made 4 local flights while pilots and ground personnel observed the plane. A fire fighting car and an ambulance moved to the field. After the fourth local flight, the plane touched down with retracted landing gear on a grass orth of the runway, and the aircraft skidded for a stretch of about 1 e crew was unhurt. The underside of the fuselage was only slightl- radome under the nose and the ventral turret under the fuselage .yed. About soldiers observed the landing with great enthusiasm. In the evening, the I1-28 was towed away. 2 17. In the first half of August, the AA 4 MK 3 and Fishnet radar sets were no longer observed Aouj~h of the eastern taxiway end. No information could be obtained on the -ne location of the sets. All other radio installations remained unchanged. 12 18. Prior to 2 September, the new air force unit was not-involved in normal duties. The unit was stdbioned in a camp at Forest District No 94. 13 19. The AA gun emplacement was still located at Forest District No 123. Four tents, a wooden temporary building, and a truck shed were located south of the AA gun emplacement. The AA gun emplacement at Forest District No 124/125 was equipped with about 10 AA guns and trucks. The AA guns had a chassis with two wheels and seemed to be of a caliber smaller than 37-m* Some of the tents had been dismantled and replaced by temporary buildifgs. 8 20. A]a at daily, railroad tank cars were unloaded at Fuel Depot I. These tank cars *oved in columns of 9 cars from Vogelsang railroad station. On 20 August, road construction was completed within the area of the ammunition depot. Machinery and equipment were transferred to the western portion of the landing field. The ammunition sheds were under construction. 4 22. Underground trans Dormer stations were erected about 300 npete ~/ m both runway,' en The transformer boxes measured 6 x 14.4_ ed of iron plate s6 mm thick; were about 2,8 meters high, ant' upper sides and the side walls were reinforced by welded angular irons 90 cm apart. The box had a brick foundation; the bottom was said to consist of steel ,plate o 10 mm thick. The boxes were scheduled to house engines and equipment for the transformer. The entire transfrmer station was to be covered with concrete. No entrances was observed. A third transformer stetion, similar to the two other t ons, was to be constructed on an undetermined location. Several cable trenchesled to the two transformers under construction Construction work was also under way at the new main transformer station south of the headquarters building. 5 23. In mid-August, some workers were transferred to Querfurt and Leipzig. Numerous workers had given notice and joined the Bauunion Potsdam. This resulted in a lack of construction workers at Gross Doelln. 24. Extension work at Gross Doelln was cancelled for undetermined reasons. Concreting work had not been started. It was rumored that this extension work would be done. in 1956. At present, only both parking areas south of the western end of the runway-will be extended. No exact information on the thickness of the concrete covering could be obtained. Thickness of 18 cm, 23 cm, and 30 were mentioned. 3 25. Short concrete tubes about 60 em in diameter were burrowed into non-concreted areas at the. parking place on the eastern runway end. The tubes were insulated with tar board on the bottom and were closed with an iron cap on the upper end. Three small holes for cables were seen in the middle of each concrete t,gbe. 14 26. Near the parked aircraft south of the eastern taxiway and there were several piles of crates with bombs of two different sizes, such as 80 to 100 cm and 160 to 200 cm. It was observed that soldiers filled-unpacked bombs with yellowish-white cartridges. 15 27. Small ribs with opening were observed at the ends of the wings and the rudder assembly of Il-28s. During take-offs and landings, smoke came Out of these openings. The exchange of crews was done very quickly, and, duri procedure, the lower peetion of the rear turre position was occupied by a soldier or 1V0 wear with a par%chute. 11 28. In general tank cars with a capacity of 7,000 to 8,000 liters and the tank trucks with trailers were employed in refueling procedures, which lasted for 7 to 9 minutes, as was observed when checking these procedures during eight operations. Two soldiers wearing no protective clothes but normal uniform, climbed on a ladder to the tank opening and opened the cap by means of tools, similar to a screw driver. Both hoses were suspended into the tank opening The'hose tip was similar to a pistol. 9 29. Maintenance work by means of repair shop trucks on aircraft at the parking area. The exchange of tires was a presumed .that engines were also exchanged there because large wooden crates were moved several times to the parkin aria.
