COCOM Document No. 3990
i,'IEMOR ,NDUM BY T' GF?JEAN DELEGATION
ON THE EXP04T TO T7E US, 3 OF LITHIUM ALUbMINIUM HYDRIDE
The German authorities have recoived en applieation to
license a shipment to the Soviet Union of
100 kg lithium aluminium hydride,
covered by Item 35 of the Atomic Energy List,
valued at 4708.
The material is the same as mentioned in COCOM Documents 3315, 3389,
3554, 3664, 3312 and CH/1538. It will be used as reducing agent in
the production of pharmaceutical products.
It is extremely difficult to use this compound as source for
lithium metal on account of its high percentage of aluminium, such a
process would also be very uneconomical since there are sufficient
natural resources of lithium bearing minerals.
The German Delegation ?cull. like to mention the fact that the
above material will be shipped together with. 54 other kinds of
laboratory chemicals, not covered by the International Lists or ty
the Atomic Energy List.
The German Dolegati.;n su',::iit the case as an ad hoc request and
trust that in view of the foregoing and the civilian er -use no
objection will be raised against the shipment. The German Delegation
would appreciate hearing the views of Governments by June ldt, 1960.
