Thank you for your note of 21 August regarding a release date of
1 November for me. I want to express my personal appreciation to you
for your interest in me personally and to let you know that our pro-
fessional and personal relationship has been and is most satisfying,
and one, I am reluctant to relinquish despite my expressed position in
my letter of 11 August.
I immediately informed General Funk of the fact that you would
make every effort to free me in time for the assignment on his staff.
Also I indicated that this release date was conditional on a negative
requirement for really important services that could still be required
of me in connection with my present work. I further indicated you
would let me know definitely regarding my availability on or about
1 September, that date being some 10 days from the date of your letter
and in line with the return of Jack from leave.
I'm hoping we can give General Funk a firm answer soon. For if
I should not be available by 1 November he can start action to secure
another Officer for the proffered position.
