IWO,
In case you may not have seen the newspaper and professional
journal stories about our Russian translation program, you may have
questions about it and your relation to it. Last year the Senate
expressed concern over the discrepancy between the Soviet scientists'
use of our research findings, and our use of theirs. In the words
of the Appropriations Committee's report- "Failure to promptly make
available to American scientists the full findings of Russian scien-
tists opens the door to useless duplication of work, waste of time
and money, and delay in grappling effectively with the major disease
problems of today."We are concerned with reporting the results of Russian
medical research, not with the ideological or political aspects
of medicine and health in the Soviet Union. We are trying to
place the information about the results of such research in the
hands of those who can make the best evaluation and use of it.
To this end we sought assistance from the Medical Library
Association, and to this you owe your present place on our
distribution list.
From our own point of view we are anxious to have this
information made available to research workers generally, and
particularly to the recipients of Public Health Service research
grants, and we shall appreciate any assistance you can give us
in calling these publications to their attention.
I hope you will return the enclosed postal card promptly.
We are required by law to make an annual review of our distribution
lists, and unless we hear that you wish to continue receiving these
publications, we shall have to drop you from our list.
Sincerely,
Scott Adams, Librarian
