GUEST - Senator Joseph Clark - Democrat of Pennsylvania
CPYRGHT
REPORTER: "Senator, recently a gentlemen lost a libel suit against
the CIA and they said, the court I believe, that the CIA could say anything
they vented to, in fact in --- when they were protecting our National Security
Senator, - has the CIA, - is it abogi the law now, is that what they are
telling us?"
SENATOR CLARK: "I'll answer your question indirectly by spying in my
judgement there are three major threats to the successful survival of American
Democracy, and the first is the Military Industrial Complex which General
Eisenhower warned us against which is evidenced in very high quarters by our
strong support of military regimes in various parts of the world and. by the
enormous impacts which the Military and their Industrial partners exercise
over public opinion -- the effect they have on members of Congress and of t1-~e
Senate.
The second danger is the CIA, an intelligence agency, which we got to
have, which practically every other nation has, which I think in our country
has achieved a position of power pretty close to the danger line-
The third as evidenced by recent disclosure in the newspapers is the
FBI and the threat they post to deprivacy of the individual citizen and the further
threat they pose by way of blackmail, direct or indirect, on anybody who has the
effrontery to say anything unkind about Mr. J. Edgar Hoover.
