Approved For Release 2002/06/18 3ftWP74B00447R000100010038-0 IDEALIST IDEA 3004 Copy 2 8 March 1966 25X1f 25X1A SUBJECT: RECORD 1. I ladvised, by telephone, that indica- tions are Ya e a rcraft was over stressed causing the left wing to fall about 12 to 1S inches outboard from the wing root. This failure was followed by a fairly severe pitch up which probably caused the engine mounts to fall and the rest of the aircraft came apart at that time. 2. There are several factors which may have contributed to the structural failure. The fact that the aircraft was indicated approximately 210 knots at 35,000 feet in a posi-- tion of a climbing right turn with empty main fuel tanks and fuel in the auxiliary fuel tanks may have contributed to the initial failure. With fuel in the auxiliary tanks and empty main tanks the rigidity of the wing is affected. Added to this is the unknown force applied by the use of the right aileron at the aims time. While the critical G force at the portion of the wing which failed is stated to be 4.5, it seems unlikely that any qualified pilot would apply 4.5 0 to this aircraft. It may follow that the con- ditions noted above have reduced the force required to cause structural failure to a sufficient degree that the maneuver resulted structural failure. 3. It is my understanding that as a result of the above Information, which was passed to Gen. Geary, by phone, by Mr. Kelly Johnson, the Air Force has released their U_2 air- craft for flight and are no 1 n interested in a special inspection to be performed at 25X1A 4. The above information is not official and should not be used to make decisions regarding the accident. colonel USAF Deputy for Field Activities., OSA Approved For Release 2002/06/18 : CIA-RDP74B00447R000100010038-0 C7~F"wucn .. ~?. - do 01403 sad IDEALIST a...y-o- Vie%llut YtIM P.lf..s. 25X1A 25X1A Approved For Release 2002/06/181-P74B00447ROQ0100010038-0 IDZA BT ID 3004 Pages 2 25X1A D/YA/ tt :bm (8 liar 66) DiatZ ibut ; b/SIA 2 IIt8A 3 D/FA/Q$A 4 /eU 5 / ITWALIST 6th' Approved For Release 2002/06/18 : CIA-RDP74B00447R000100010038-0
