I am contemplating a visit to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library,
possibly as early as April 1973, to survey the defense-classified
holdings for which the Central Intelligence Agency is responsible for
declassification action, viz. , documents originating from the Office
of Strategic Services and its predecessor organization, the Office of
Coordinator of Information. The purpose of the survey is to obtain
a better understanding of the magnitude and complexity of the declas-
sification task and to discuss with you or members of your staff,
alternative methods for its accomplishment. The possibility of such
a trip has been raised with Dr. Reed, and he suggested that I contact
you directly.
It would be very helpful in planning the visit if an estimate of
the volume of classified records involved could be provided.
inventories or shelf lists exist for the groups of records containing
classified OSS/COL documents, perhaps it would be possible to
duplicate selected portions of them and forward them to the Agency.
Any assistance along these lines that your staff can provide me would
be greatly appreciated.
