In December, 1987, the first general gathering sponsored
by the Asian Solidarity Committees *Jac* t .ir inception in
March-April, 1955, will take place in Cairo Egypt. Like
the constituent gathering, which took place in the week
preceding the ro-Asian ("Baandusg") CG tearenc. of
r
in Indonesia, this gathering is closely linked to the
International communist attempt to ally itself with and
e the countries of the uea+cemznitted world, and
through action at the nea?goveer ae*ntal level, eoneetttute$
a satins uve r to exert pressure upon the governments of these
countries.
In spite Of x a ber of Attempts made from We 1955

conference of geva. ra a s, 80 such conference has ever been
held, and the five Colombo countries (Iodise

It is, however, interesting to note that as early as the
end of September of MS. Egyptian sources sought to **courage
the convening of the conference there, and Presides Nast
himself was involved in efforts to bring the conference
to Cairo.
Central issue* which contributed to the failures to
bring about a second Ilasduarg Conference included the insistence
of some of the Colombo powers an the Inc1*eiou of Israel, the
tborsy question of the propriety of Soviet psrtfcipatie*#
the rsluctaace of states participating in the Baghdad aad
SEATO pact* to expose tbeaaaeselves to criticism at such a
gathering, satisfaction with the cooperative efforts and
consultative opportvaitie s available witkin the framework
of the United Nations. and concern that, if the gsthsri

it might be *zpleitsed primarily as a forum, for .atxsmiet
Arab nationalism.
