SUBJECT: Inspection Report No. 9 - AC-3 with
25X1A5a1
1. Project Description:
The AC-3 is an HF antenna coupler which provides an impedance range
of 35 to 1200 ohms resistance and 0 to ? J1200 ohms reactance and a trans-
mission line of 50?J 0 ohms impedance. The AC-3 is manually operated and
provides the impedance match over the 3 to 30 Mc/s range with a VSWR of
less than 2:1 while handling 400 watts of continuous RF power. The AC-3
can measure and monitor the forward and reflected power (and hence the
VSWR) in the transmission line, and contains a protective circuit which
deenergizes the transmitter when a preset level of reflected power is
exceeded due to mistuing or malfuncti.Qn. An internal 5Q oh n dummy load
(over 3 to 30 Mc/c) io included to permit matching of the tranrmitt@r.
Primary power to operate the AC-3 is 120/240 (?1010, 50/60 cps, AC
mains.

6. Contractor's Performance:
a. On schedule and expected to remain so: -Yes
b. Within obligated funds and expected to remain so: Yes
c. Satisfactory technical progress: Yes
7. Project Status :
Two preproduction AC-3's are assembled and are in operating
condition. The coupler was demonstrated at reduced inputs and
loads and appears to function in an acceptable manner. Test data
is being compiled to insure that the couplers will meet the perform-
ance specifications indicated on the attached chart. Eight test
points at three operating frequencies were selected. Malfunction
of the GFE PAL-350 transmitter (repeated burn out of the R-105,
50 watt, 80 K resistor) delayed the testing until the problem was
resolved. The two preprods, along with the test data, are scheduled
for delivery on 29 June 1966 via air.
Miscellaneous direction was given and decisions were made with
respect to warehouse spares, operating spares, spare parts lists,
etc. In addition, two preliminary instruction books were received
for review and comments.
