The IDFREORG program will be run on the UNIVAC 1100/84 on a yearly basis,
following the successful completion of the IDFTRANS program.
The purpose of the program is to reorganize the Installations Data File (IDF)
after its annual archival in order to consolidate and more efficiently access the
remaining data. Processing sequentially through the IDF, the program transfers
readouts for a MRN (that have not been updated within one month of processing)
to.an area of the Historical Installations Data File (HIDF) for temporary storage.
As each readout is transferred to the HIDF, it is deleted from the IDF until
all appropriate readouts for an MRN have been transferred to the HIDF. The process
is then reversed to restore the readouts back into the IDF under the appropriate
TGT-HDR. The readouts are stored in an area other than the current IDF area in
order to minimize disk contention, and all readouts for a MRN are stored in a
contiguous fashion in order to cut the amount of time needed to access the data.
The above process continues until the readouts for every MRN in the IDF have been
transferred, deleted, and restored.
Since IDFREORG is not time-critical, a utility mechanism has been built in
to allow the operator to stop the program.
